As someone who always struggles with picking a green for any era, what would people suggest for US Sherman's using Games Workshop paints.

Keen to get a good starting hue as I'm doing one in 28mm and so getting it badly wrong will look pretty obvious!

Live drab is mixed by just adding a few drops of orange to a pure green. It isn't that hard to mix with a bit of experimenting.

Olive Drab originally was produced by mixing yellow ochre & black pigments together. While GW paints don't have these colors specifically, they have colors that are close. In the old range I mixed Bubonic Brown (pretty close to Yellow Ochre if not the actual thing) & Chaos Black to produce a very nice OD color. In the new range it would be Zamesi Desert & Abbadon Black. Mix until you get a ratio you like (IIRC I did 2 parts Yellow Ochre to Black for a dark OD).

Damon.

Must admit I hadn't considered mixing.

The Death Corps Drab (can't believe I just typed that) might suit.

I think Death Corps Drab is too dark for what you want. If you don't care to mix (and I don't blame you, as I can never recreate the same shade again), and you want to stick with GW paints, then it looks like Deathworld Forest or Steel Legion Drab are pretty close to the right shade.

I'd want to test a dab of each on some test plastic and let it dry to see what it really looks like on a model. The paint chips on the monitor may not be a true reflection of the real color. Deathworld Forrest may be "too green and not enough drab", and the Steel Legion Drab may be "too drab and not enough green".

I've used Deathworld Forrest, but I'm likely not as picky on colours as most people; but worth a test if you have the colour on hand,

Yeah,Deathworld Forest I could see, Steel Legion Drab looks pretty brown to me. Well online anyway.

Guess I'll have to try an figure it out in store while the guy behind the counter looks at me like an Alien when I answer the compulsory "So what are you painting?" question!

I think adding a couple of Vallejo paints to your collection would be much easier …

Indeed it might be apart from the question would then change to which one of them is appropriate.

To be honest I use their paint most of the time but buying one bottle on line is annoying and there's a GW store in town!

Normally when doing something new I'll just buy however many Vallejo paints are required but this lone Sherman has hit a gap in the system!

Whoa! Call off the dogs!

Major Embarrassment! Just found a bottle of Vallejo US Olive Drab I in with some other stuff I tided away ages ago! That's going down as the base color and I'll go from there!

Many thanks for the suggestions. Just going off to have a Doh!Moment.

You know some things are just not meant to be. Took the OD painted Sherman round a friends to check it out with some decals he had spare.

On the way home put the small box it was in on the roof while I was getting the dog in the back. Drove off, five miles down the road remembered I hadn't taken it off the roof……………..

Went back and managed to find the crushed box and the decals. Although the hull wasn't too bad the track sections and the turret had been driven over and not worth trying to repair.

Oh well, its only money!

Ouch! That is tough. Plenty more in the shops though!

I feel your pain, but on the flip side its one of the few times that a car has run over and crushed a tank, rather than the normal way round ☺

Now turn it into a bombed out scenery model!

Trajanus02 Jul 2019 7:35 a.m. PST

One thing is for sure it says a lot for the strength of Warlord Games resin hulls!

The track sections had loads of the outside edges of the tracks broken away and had been snapped off the hull.

The commanders cupola, which is a metal insert, had vanished and the gun barrel looked like a corkscrew while the turret itself had deep gouges all over it, but the actual hull just looked like someone had deliberately modelled some battle damage into it!
