"June 6 marks the anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy that led to the liberation of Europe during the Second World War. In order to clear the way for the invasion, the Allies launched increasing numbers of bombing raids to soften resistance. It was dangerous work and allied aircrews were often shot down, either dying of their injuries or taken prisoner. But some escaped.
