When painting your miniatures, do you ever use Sharpie brand permanent markers?

Aethelflaeda was framed19 Jun 2019 5:22 a.m. PST

Yes, just the thing for tattoos. Do tend to bleed a bit too much sometimes.

Yep – for outlining and for things like eyes

Private Matter19 Jun 2019 6:00 a.m. PST

I use them for repairs on dropped figures.

Rich Bliss19 Jun 2019 6:01 a.m. PST

On occasion.

Very occasionally. Usually to blacken the ends of gun barrels after snipping off bayonets.

Yes for painting road wheels on tank models. Have to seal or it will bleed.

i used one to do the black on a half timbered house, easier than a brush.

Yes

Grelber19 Jun 2019 9:15 a.m. PST

No, I use Pigma Micron 005 pens to outline eyes and put in the pupil, and sometimes separating areas of the same or similar colors. Also good for lips.
Wish they made white and flesh, though.

Sure do, for road wheels, details and mostly for roundels and markings on 1/300 aircraft.

Some good ideas here for other uses as well.

No, but I'm likely to start, after reading this thread… Cheers!

Never thought about doing it but might try it now.

von Schwartz19 Jun 2019 2:49 p.m. PST

Yeah, works pretty well too like for horse furniture, they need more colors though, as well as white. Be aware, the end product is rather glossy and will need a good dull coat, unless you want glossy.

I use Sharpie and other pens for writing numbers and other text on vehicles and things.

Yes.

Never Sharpie, they will bleed when varnished.

Micron art pens all the time!

CeruLucifus21 Jun 2019 7:45 p.m. PST

What miniMo said. Years ago I followed a paper banner tutorial that finished by blackening the edges with a Sharpie. Turns out lacquer makes it run. E.g. Testors Dullcote. Or the Rustoleum clear gloss lacquer I was using as a first layer.

von Schwartz23 Jun 2019 10:22 a.m. PST

Never Sharpie, they will bleed when varnished.

Really, gee, I never had that problem. But I use both Sharpies and Pigma Brush Pens, Micron pens work if they don't have a hard tip.

Sometimes.
