Anyone have any tips on how to paint the flags that are already on the poles?

Being in the process of doing just that, I'd say definitely keep the "arms length" idea in mind. I found the Confederate flag to be tougher than the Union. You need to only suggest the stars at that scale.

I had a similar problem with Old Glory 10mm ACW. I ended handpainting the Confederate flags but with union flags I shrunk some images I found on the net, morphed the federal flag to fit and printed it on decal paper and put them on the metal flags and painted the edges to match.

in 10mm I found those had to paint flags a nuance and removed them. Printed paper flags look much better.
