"The Willys MB 1/4 ton 4x4 truck, commonly known as Jeep, is such a famous and important vehicle that you must have a large collection of it. But is your collection interesting enough? The British were especially good at special warfare during WWII. There was a British unit called Popski's Private Army. Their flexible and bold operations gained many victories. They modified their main vehicle Willys MB and carried out operations behind the German lines. Those modified Willy MBs were like weapon shops with various guns. The soldiers even tried to fit the Wasp flamethrower which was used in an armoured vehicle on the Willys MB to kill the enemy with blazing flames…."

"…..was used in an armoured vehicle on the Willys MB to kill the enemy with blazing flames…". Or its operators/drivers. You couldn't get me near that thing for any amount of money, when one errant bullet might set the whole thing off. |

Wow ! Nice model though ! But wouldn't want to be the crew ! Did read a book and journals, etc., about the PPA. A very interesting spec op unit. Like some of the other Brit outfits, e.g. the LRDG, SAS, SBS, SIG, etc. |

I game with plastic Army Men. I LOVE this! I may have to make rules for this in my games… I agree: I suspect it would get incredibly hot for the crewmen. The idea that flamethrowers would explode, if hit by a stray bullet, is more Hollywood, than reality. However, this jeep is shown with gas cans strapped all over, which is riskier than the Flamethrower strapped to an Infantryman's back… Still, when gaming with plastic Army Men, I don't concern myself, too much, with 'realism': "It's a game, not a simulation…" Cheers! |

But for the monochrome photograph I would have said this was a wind up. Consider the range of the flame thrower and how near the jeep must get to be effective. Imagine the driver sitting on this time bomb with no chance to dodge and take cover. Notice the armour provided…or lack of it….. Popski's Private Army was legend to schoolboys in the early 60s, but its effectiveness might just have been exaggerated in the well known book.
