"Space battles are an important aspect of science fiction, especially space opera, and we want them to be engaging. At first blush, that might sound easy. Space battles have hyperdrives and torpedoes and lasers, oh my. How could that not be engaging? But it's harder than you might think. Spacecrafts are complex and alien. It's easy to drown your audience in endless technical details, fill page upon page with ships firing ineffectually at each other, or leave the audience wondering why the battle was set in space at all.

Fortunately, we storytellers are clever folk, and we have methods at our disposal for ensuring our space battles keep the audience on the edge of their seats. So strap in to your favorite spaceship and spool up the FTL drive. It's time to explore some tips on keeping your space battle engaging…."

LOL
After reading this and seeing the other things on illogical starship designs, I'm sorry. But he just made Legend of the Galactic Heroes seem perfect.

Massive fleets facing off, flanking maneuvers, fighters launched at close quarters, orbital objects and even stars or black holes employed as tactical and strategic objective points. It's just perfection.

Yes, an interesting article and spot-on in many areas. As the author of many rip-snorting space battles, I approve :)

Ah "Make Damage Matter"

I use to have a small space battle board game where you could design your own ships and engage in fleet actions.

Had one fleet action that involved ships from Destroyers to Super Dreadnoughts.

Well a squadron (four ships) of Destroyers decided to go after a Super Dreadnought.

But before they could get within range their target fired first (greater range does mean something in outer space).

Well after it got done shooting those four Destroyers were just space junk.

Two were destroyed, one was dead in space and the last one could move (slowly) but it was out of the fight.

Did learn a lesson that day…

If you are going to send Destroyers to take out a Super Dreadnought send dozens because it is going to take out quite a few of them.

Better yet use another Super Dreadnought to engage it.
