I think I know the answer to this, but I will ask anyway. A couple years ago I purchased the Saga rules and several supplements. I never got to play more than one or two games before my gaming partner moved. I wanted to get back into Saga, but I really don't want to buy things I don't need. I assume that all of these 1st edition rules and stuff are now worthless … true?

I don't see why you can't still play with them. If it's you and someone else who has never played or also played 1st edition you can play as is. If you go to club/store and they're playing 2nd edition it may be wise to play a few times before investing in the new version.

I'm not sure what the changes are from 1 to 2. I've played 1st edition a few times and enjoyed it but unless most of the guys in my group a going to get into it or all move away and new people who want to play move in I doubt I will reinvest in the game.

I've played both I and II. I loved version one so much I painted 9 factions and played it exclusively for several years.

I bought the #2 rules but, no one else from my group will.

I've played perhaps 8 games of version II this past year and actually like it better. Now they have magic and I don't do magic… So my player base has shrunk to the point that I doubt I'll be playing Saga 2 much at all any more.

There is a very active group in my area, but they are all playing Saga II.

We play SAGA 2 here in Texas and there are active groups in the larger metro areas. Each year we run a SAGA tournament at our annual game convention held in Austin. I also like version 2, both Vikings and Crusades. Also not much into Fantasy/Magic and will stick with the historical version.

My mounted Normans and Saracens love the ability to move without SAGA dice while outside "L" of the enemy – makes for some nice flanking moves.

Skipper John – you and I need to play some SAGA!!!

Charlie,

I'm in Universal City. So, back to the original question … all of my original edition stuff can go in the recycle bin; right? GB did not provide any type of upgrade kit or something like that.

If you want to play tournaments, you will need SAGA II. I actually prefer SAGA II over the original edition. The second edition cleans up some 'cheese' and fixes some overpowered battle boards. Additionally, the Book of Battles is a great scenario book. I also enjoy the Age of Crusades and Age of Magic books for second edition. If you can afford it, go second.

My impression is that the campaign supplement, Age of the Wolf, or something like that, is more or less useable with Saga II. I think Aetius & Arthur (which I've never tried, so take this with a shaker of salt) has many of the elements that were incorporated in Saga II, and is kind of Saga 1.5.
In our group, one of the more enthusiastic Saga I players died, and we've kind of stopped playing Saga. A couple of us have Saga II rules, and have tried them out, but the group as a whole doesn't seem interested in trying out version 2.

You can certainly play and enjoy Saga v1 if you have it, but if you want to play with others or play in tournaments you will need version 2. I sold all my v1 stuff on eBay, so obviously some folks want it.
Having played both, I think v2 is a cleaner set of rules, and the battle boards are certainly better balanced; some of the v1 factions were weak (Normans) or too strong (Irish, Jomsvikings).

OK, thanks for the inputs. I guess I will go ahead and put the items I have on eBay.

Having played both, I would dump v1 aside from the dice and figures.

SAGA has a very large community of players, if players are organised at all they will be playing v2.

Of course you would be able to find a single player who will play v1 but you would be limiting yourself.

The v2 rulebook and the BoB's are a must, both are quite inexpensive. The source books are expensive, in the short term you would just need to buy one.

Great discussion. I also find version 2 a cleaned up version. Am interested in the comments about the book of battles. I have most of the scenarios from version 1 is there really anything different in bob?
Thanks

Joe
