The temptation is strong to dabble in the Russian Civil War using these rules. Has anyone used OHW's "Machine Age" rules for interwar combat? Any comments/likes/dislikes? Thanks in advance!

About a year ago a friend and I did a RCW fictional campaign using the OHW system. Took us about a month at two battles per week. Lots of fun and as I recall, the Whites won. The Campaign was just a line with 5 dots, indicating cities between Kiev and Moscow. Move a dot closer to your opponents base if won. Scenario rolled for, as was army composition. If one side was the attacker in the scenario, it was played by whoever won the last battle. Worked for us😄.

These rules are my go to rules for conventions. The machine age rules work for me. You might want to consider a breakdown roll for armor. I have fought both Tannenberg and the Marne making each unit equal a historical division or corps and fudging the artillery support with great success…

I've used them for the SCW, and they worked fine. Yes, I did fiddle around with them a bit, but not much. I created army lists which let each side choose the odd tank, if it was appropriate, and replaced a lot of the cavalry with motorised infantry (which was far more common in the SCW, less so in the RCW).

An armoured train might be fun in the RCW, a tank on train tracks. You'd need to pick an appropriate scenario and replace one of the roads with a railway.

I use the six hit, multiple dice variant (units throw 1,2 or 3 D6, corresponding to D6-2, D6 and D6+2, hitting on a 3+ in the open and 5+ in cover/armour. Units are destroyed on six hits). There is less bookeeping than the 15 hit version but the kill probabilities are the same. The players seem to enjoy it more for some reason.

We use the 6 hit, multiple dice variant as well.

Martin Rapier/ Calico Bill,

where are those rules located? I know I saw them on a blog but can't recall which one.

Thanks
Dan

Dan,
Here is the article. We use the "multiples of 3" variant.

Thanks for the responses, folks. Great ideas for a campaign and for modifications. It is good to know these rules work (at least for some) before I take the plunge.

Calico Bill,

Thanks

I think the nice thing about the OHW rules is that they are so simple it is easy to modify them, and you can mix and match ideas from the different period variants.
