I am reading "Napoleon's Great Adversaries" by Rothenberg. Other than some assorted Ospreys and uniform books, it is actually the first book I have ever read on the Napoleonic Wars.

Anyway, there are a few pages about the 1809 campaign in Italy and Dalmatia. To me, it sounds like the Italian Campaign is kind of interesting. I have played many Napoleonic games over the years, but I have never played a game based on this campaign. It seems to be generally overlooked. Does it not have the "cool factor" or are there other reasons at play?

I look forward to your thoughts on the matter.

Napoleon is not there, so less coverage. Eugene, Napoleon's (adopted?) son generals an army against Austrian's John (Archduke Charles' brother) and there are some interesting battles. More even-up generalship.

John Gill has written a superb trilogy on 1809 and provides much needed analysis on Italy Dalmatia Poland Tyrol and Germany. It's not all Boney and Karl on the Danube.

I second the recommendation of John Gills books. They are superb. Robert Epstein's Prince Eugene at War is also useful, but nowhere near as good as Gill. The campaign has plenty of small to medium size battles in a campaign fought over a vast distance. You get to see Eugene falter, then develop as a general. Don't forget that the Army of Italy eventually fights at Wagram.

Michael Hopper has done a very nice scenario book for the battles of this campaign called "Duel of the Princes". A couple of reviews:

Here's the first of a series of interesting scenarios for that campaign. Follow them through to Gospic. They're a great, fun read:

We did a "Campaign in a Day" based upon the later part of Eugene's campaigning in Italy and Inner Austria:

I also have scenarios for:

Sacile, Battle of the Piave, Tarvis, St. Michael, Klagenfurt, Graz, and Raab in muy own 1809 scenario book.

This theater and year has a lot to recommend it!
