Which game / rule system do you think has been the most popular for 6mm models? Popular here meaning the most games played with a given set with 6mm figures, not rules specifically designed for the scale.

Some ideas:

Epic
WRG 1925-50
Napoleon's Battles
WRG 1950-75
DBA

Fitzovich Supporting Member of TMP22 May 2019 2:25 a.m. PST

WRG 1925-50 would be my suggestion as the one that has contributed the most to growth in the hobby and hence the most popular if that is really important.

Calico Bill22 May 2019 2:37 a.m. PST

Epic. I've played more games of that than anything else in 6mm. A couple of hundred games at least. Epic Armageddon was being played here twice a week for years until last year.. I miss it.😢 Still, the community is strong on the net.

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP22 May 2019 3:39 a.m. PST

Personally it would be Spearhead (WWII) and Age of Eagles (Napoleonic)

Formerly Regiment Games Fezian22 May 2019 3:43 a.m. PST

Ogre miniatures game.

Torquemada22 May 2019 3:44 a.m. PST

Epic!

roving bandit22 May 2019 4:44 a.m. PST

I would have to agree that Epic probably has had the most games played ever in that scale. Just by weight of numbers. There are so many more "GW hobbyist" compared to any other "miniature hobbyists" that I wouldn't be surprised that a game of Epic is being played just about everyday somewhere in the world. Not too many other miniature games can rival that.

mad monkey 122 May 2019 4:50 a.m. PST

Epic.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP22 May 2019 5:13 a.m. PST

EPIC … Albeit we had to modify/meld/cherry pick/add/subtract, etc., over the decades. To make it a "Better" war game. That suited our ideas of what a good war game was. Basing much on the original SM1 rules. Which we still use with a number of additions/updates/modifications, etc., …

We added Unit Activation(UA) waaay back with SM1 in '90 … it only took GW more than a decade to add that to their E:A rules. huh?

IMO SM2/TL was the "worse" set of all their Epic rules. But had the most fans. huh? E40K and then E:A were better attempts. Albeit those two rule sets were very different in mechanics, etc.

The Fan based rules are and continue to be the "best" option, IMO. As long as it has UA … IGOUGO is like using a musket vs. an M16. evil grin

But as always do what works for you and your gaming crew. Not me and especially Not GW. I'm pretty sure the GW =][= and/or GW Commissars won't pay you a visit. If you use Epic models[Toys] to play other rule systems. E.g. FWC, The Crucible, Strike Legion, Dirtside II, etc., etc. … thumbs up

Achtung Minen22 May 2019 2:51 p.m. PST

Battletech.

jfleisher22 May 2019 3:02 p.m. PST

Another vote for Ogre miniatures.

Covert Walrus22 May 2019 3:57 p.m. PST

Ogre and Epic.

Dirtside 2 is a good game, but not widespread; WRG 1925-50 is showing its age compared to say Blitzkrieg Commander.

robert piepenbrink Supporting Member of TMP22 May 2019 4:21 p.m. PST

I think only Ogre and Epic are contenders, really. But I have no idea how you'd arrive at an informed answer.

Pictors Studio22 May 2019 10:35 p.m. PST

I would think Battletech would be a big contender too. You can play it with 4 mechs a side and have a decent game so the cost to get into it is pretty low, one of the reasons we played it instead of GW games in high school.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP23 May 2019 7:26 a.m. PST

I'll go with Epic, OGRE & BT … in that order …

ScoutJock23 May 2019 7:32 a.m. PST

In my one man gaming club it's the WRG rules by a unanimous decision.

Space Marine/ Epic

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP23 May 2019 9:00 a.m. PST

Much as I love and prefer Ogre, and love the Epic minis, those miniatures have only been available sporadically. Organised play for those games has never come close to the popularity of MechForce in its heyday under FASA.

Battletech ftw. The large and ever-growing range of 6mm minis have been steadily and widely available and used since 1985.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa23 May 2019 10:49 a.m. PST

I'll be controversial, despite being an Epic player, I reckon I saw way more games of Challenger played at my local club in the 90's than I ever saw Epic games… either in the club or my local GW club night!

Valderian23 May 2019 12:03 p.m. PST

Dirtside II (with GZG minis), BattleTech, Epic, Ogre – in this order. FWC is a very good set of rules, with many plays, but too bad for this poll, as it has no specific models.

Covert Walrus23 May 2019 3:57 p.m. PST

miniMo, Battletech is dead.
One of Eurpoe's leading games supply companies says it hasn't been played in 15 years, so they never stock it. Also, he's never seen anyone play it in at least 15 years.

langobard24 May 2019 2:33 a.m. PST

Another vote for Spearhead WW2 rules.

Personal logo Whirlwind Supporting Member of TMP24 May 2019 3:10 a.m. PST

FWC is a very good set of rules, with many plays, but too bad for this poll, as it has no specific models.

The poll is intended to be simply about games played. If you have seen/heard of Future War Commander being used as the ruleset of choice the most, then it should go in.

No love for the various Polemos rules? Marketed by Baccus 6mm and specifically intended for 6mm. To be fair any rules intended for big battles can be played using 6mm figures. Either put more figures on each baseor scale down.

WARGAMESBUFF04 Jun 2019 9:28 a.m. PST

WW2
For brigade sized games FIREFLY
for larger formations SPEARHEAD.
Napoleonics

I would have to say…

EPIC

But like all things GW they killed it off with some horrible written rules.

Personal logo Whirlwind Supporting Member of TMP08 Jun 2019 6:56 p.m. PST

No love for the various Polemos rules? Marketed by Baccus 6mm and specifically intended for 6mm.

I really like the various Polemos rules and play the Ancients, ECW, Napoleonic and American Wars ones a lot. But nothing I have ever seen indicates that they would be amongst the most popular 6mm rules.

1815Guy11 Jun 2019 7:24 a.m. PST

I use 6mm/Adlers to pander to my megalomanic tendencies. So I use the scale for large scale battles with multiple Corps on the table.

For Napoleonics, mine are based as 1 brigade to a 2" square base using high level rules such as Blucher, or the old Volley and Bayonet.

For WW2 I think Spearhead overall is a great set of rules. It's not a detailed set; there are no terrain rules, morale is simplistic at best, but Ive never had a bad game with them.

If you are prepared to tinker with them "Great Battles of WW2" are/were a Canadian set which almost worked. They had some neat rule constructs to handle multi-day battles, and a really simple tactical formula which made it suitable for multi-division games. I think there is a Yahoo group working with them to finish them off.

freecloud19 Jun 2019 5:14 a.m. PST

IME its been Fistful of TOWS, Shako 2 and Epic recently but that's the periods I play. Old Skool was various WRG rules and V&B.

williamb03 Jul 2019 8:26 p.m. PST

Since the question was what rule system is the most popular for 6mm and not what I like or use my answer would most likely be Epic. I don't play it and I don't think anyone in the three clubs near me plays it. However, I constantly see more battle reports etc. for Epic than any other rules.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP04 Jul 2019 5:46 a.m. PST

The original Epic SM1 rules were based on Featherstone's IIRC. That as a basis then we added Unit Activation, and few other tweaks … It is he "best" set of rules we have come across with the additions. And we have been wargaming since the '60s … old fart

Sargonarhes05 Jul 2019 2:06 a.m. PST

I started 6mm playing Battletech, I still play Battletech.

But I would think some WWII game would be the more commonly played 6mm game out there.

Capt Flash05 Jul 2019 4:08 a.m. PST

Battletech is dead.

Umm, Catalyst Games and their Kickstarter that funded $30 USDK in the first 7 minutes and is skyrocketing to over $1 USDMillion would just like to say "I'm not dead yet!"

As much as I like Epic, I don't think it can play ball in the Million Dollar Kickstarter Club. My beloved Ogre Miniatures don't; the Ogre Designer's Edition for board game with counters hit $923,680. USD

BattleTech: Clan Invasion is now officially in the Kickstarter Million Dollar Club; and with 24 days left to go in the campaign, 1.5 million is feasible.

It's not dead, Jim.

I never liked BT but from what I see it is alive & well. At least within it own community. I think I can safely say the same about OGRE.

I had Battletech circa '89. I sold my skateboard to get it.

It was cool, even with the cardboard mechs, coz they were Robotech!

Team Yankee 6mm is pretty popular, I went in a tournament this year. I came last.

I would have done that too, but five years earlier … well, you know … this …

green beanie04 Aug 2019 5:29 a.m. PST

I started in the 80's with FASA Battle Tech
Then switched to FASA Renegade Legion. Late 80's.
Then in the 90's I saw my first GW Space Marine Epic boxed game. It came with cardboard buildings, (Oh, how I miss those buildings. I lost mine due to a basement flood and now can not afford to replace them for they must have golden parts for what they are charging for them) plastic armor, infantry and Titian. Everything you need in one box. I got hooked. Then in three years GW dropped the line and shafted us Epic gamers. Some years later they brought it back but changed the infantry basing and some of the minis. Gamers I used to game with all of a sudden would not game with me for I had the Old stuff and hated the new rules. I could not part with the game so boxed it up and packed it away. About a month ago I dusted it off and figured I would try gaming again. Looks like I am back in the fold again.

1815Guy20 Aug 2019 8:57 a.m. PST

Spearhead, definitely! Ive never seen a game of Spearhead that wasnt 6mm!!

pfmodel08 May 2020 7:52 p.m. PST

Historically the most popular 6mm rules are WRG, currently they are probably Spearhead, globally, with BGMR coming 2nd. But this depends on location, FFT3 is more popular in some locations. However if you move to 15mm the story is very different.
