Do you work as a teacher by profession?

John Armatys18 May 2019 3:14 p.m. PST

Before retiring I had two spells as a lecturer, in the 1980s seven years in an FE college and in this century six years at a university.

KeepYourPowderDry18 May 2019 3:46 p.m. PST

Specialise in teaching kids with severe autism and kids with profound learning disabilities (I sort out functioning communication systems for them), although these days I spend most of my time teaching teachers (and speech therapists, and social workers) how to teach those kids. Also been known to advise HM Government.

Someone who is hired to teach.

JimDuncanUK18 May 2019 4:27 p.m. PST

I was an IT tech but was expected to be able to teach IT in a classroom environment when necessary.

Chalfant18 May 2019 4:41 p.m. PST

Yes, in special education, like KYPD38, though I teach in a Therapeutic Emotional Support classroom, which means my students all have emotional disabilities (though some also have autism or other disabilities).

I'm a high school art teacher specializing in ceramics and sculpture. Right now, my students are doing a lot of digital sculpting and 3D printing. We are in the process of setting up our new laser cutter. Lots of overlap with my miniature wargaming hobby.

After I retired from the Marine Corps, I taught middle school for 17 years. Toss up which job was tougher.

No.

mumbasa18 May 2019 6:08 p.m. PST

I taught mainly 4th grade and a little 5th grade for 41 years at the same school. The 4th graders still loved to learn and were mainly house broken (key word--mainly). ;)

von Schwartz18 May 2019 6:09 p.m. PST

Does being married to one count?

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut18 May 2019 6:10 p.m. PST

I was a developmental support technician working with mentally handicapped adults. Part of my job description was teaching life skills. Also laundry, cooking, and driving.

Gone Fishing18 May 2019 6:15 p.m. PST

Von Schwartz, that's a great answer.

I taught (at least that was my job description) for 15 years. I miss the kids, but there are a lot of other things I don't miss.

KSmyth18 May 2019 6:36 p.m. PST

I am wrapping up 36 years as a teacher. I taught in special programs for ten years. Middle school social studies for five years. Elementary school (5th and 6th grade) for nine years, and high school American history and English for twelve years. I also advised my high school yearbook and newspaper. I have 25 school days left in what has been a wonderful, if sometimes challenging career, but I'm ready to cash in my chips.

Former teacher, retired now for 10 years, but did 30 years in special education class rooms. Now I am a volunteer with several organizations in town, which means I get to work for free.

Kevin C18 May 2019 7:23 p.m. PST

I am a History professor at a small liberal arts university. In addition to teaching, I oversee the social studies education program at my university. Currently over three dozen of my former students work as teachers in at least five U.S. states and three foreign countries.

Florida Tory18 May 2019 7:23 p.m. PST

I've been an adjunct professor on the doctoral faculty at a research university since 1982.

Narratio18 May 2019 7:32 p.m. PST

When I'm not doing my real job I run training courses for the young Kazakh engineers, teaching the basics of electrical system design. I also do practical English language usage and the usual mentoring. So I'm maybe 10% of a teacher

Ferd4523118 May 2019 8:02 p.m. PST

Did 35 years as a HS history teacher. H

Desert Fox18 May 2019 8:28 p.m. PST

Yes, 25 years high school social studies teacher in the USA. Took the last two years off, may go back next year. Like Gone Fishing I miss the students, not the other things.

+1 Kevin C, keep up the great work!

I teach Professional Responsibility (ethics) seminars to lawyers as part of my state's continuing legal education requirement. In the past I taught seminars to lawyers, engineers, and surveyors on real estate law and related topics. Quite a bit of real estate law in the areas I taught-easements, road dedications, railroad rights-of-way, land boundaries, riparian and littoral rights and the like-still requires an understanding of common-law and statutory history dating back to about the mid nineteenth century to be properly understood, so my undergraduate degree in history served its purpose I suppose.

Perris070718 May 2019 9:15 p.m. PST

28 years as a middle and high school history teacher. I have 19 days left until retirement. I also coached 3 sports for 29 years. Loved every minute of it except for the utterly useless meetings conducted by district administration. If it was just teaching, I would never quit.

Swampster19 May 2019 1:44 a.m. PST

Yes. About 30 years of it.

arthur181519 May 2019 2:27 a.m. PST

I taught a mixture of English, Latin, History and Mathematics in various preparatory schools in the UK for 34 years. I'm now retired from the classroom and drawing my pension, but work as a private tutor offering individual tuition in pupils' homes for 11+ and Common Entrance examinations.

I've never regretted it, but am not sure I'd enter the profession today, the way admin and other external pressures have increased.

Bob the Temple Builder19 May 2019 2:37 a.m. PST

Started teaching in 1973 in a mixed Comprehensive School (11 to 18 year olds) for two years before moving to London. Joined a single-sex boys school, where I rose to become Deputy Headteacher. During this time I taught History, Geography, and RE.

Then moved sideways into education admin coordinating post 16 education for 14 schools in London, but still taught one day each week. I was also a part time Government adviser on vocational education.

I then moved back into full time teaching, and worked in the largest comprehensive school in London, where I coordinated vocational, technical, and careers education. I also taught IT as well as History, Business Education, and Travel & Tourism.

Left after over fifteen years and ended up as a lecturer in a Sixth Form College (16 to 19 year olds) lecturing on Travel & Tourism and Business. Finally retired after forty years.

I loved my job, enjoyed working with young people (often from very disadvantaged backgrounds), and loved to see them gain success. I hated the growing and unnecessary levels of non-teaching-related admin tasks that government introduced over the years, the dead hand of Ofsted (the Office for Standards in Education), and having to deal with the growing levels of violent behaviour (both verbal and physical).

GildasFacit Sponsoring Member of TMP19 May 2019 6:00 a.m. PST

32 years in Further Education colleges (post 16). Taught Maths & Engineering Science to various engineering students up to HND then transitioned to IT/Computing. Ran the college computer centre for a few years and then a course team leader for a group of computing/IT vocational courses.

Was offered voluntary redundancy 11 years ago and took it willingly. Had they stopped continually changing the goalposts and let me and the team do what we knew worked I'd probably still be there. Loved teaching, hated management interference – particularly from the incompetent idiots I was working with.

rustymusket19 May 2019 6:51 a.m. PST

Librarian for teens ages 12-18. As it happens, while not overtly hired to teach, I wind up teaching and mentoring young patrons on a weekly basis on a variety of topics. Plus every summer, I am paid to teach teens how to play D&D! (Gearing up for the next round as a type!)
