Would you wargame using a historical earth army (any you want from late 1800's through to Modern armies) against traditional Martian "Tripod" style opponents? Any scale you want if answering "yes". |
skedaddle | 08 May 2019 11:07 a.m. PST |
Yes, I already sort of do with All Quiet on the Martian Front. |
MajorB | 08 May 2019 11:28 a.m. PST |
Yes, I have done in the past. |

Yes, it has more than passing interest. |

Game? Sure. Would I spend money to purchase and prepare minis, terrain, etc.? Well, that hasn't happened so far… |

Oh yes. I'm heavy into All Quiet. But before then we played 1880 British Desert force against Tripods in 10mm. I'll see if I can find and post a few pics. |

Not historical. These days I strictly do imagi-nations. Although I can envision a scenario where space aliens invade Francesia. |

Played using 15mm stuff using my own rules based off Nuklear Winter '68. |

To answer my own question, I wouldn't spend money on it, but if someone else had 1914-1920s minis and some 'pods, i'd play it. |

> To answer my own question, I wouldn't spend money on it, but if someone else had 1914-1920s minis and some 'pods, i'd play it. That is my answer too. There is a lot I would play but not buy, not enough time, space, and dollars. Lovely homebrew tripods in that picture! |

Same with Parzival – happy to play but not prepare. |

If I have the firepower to destroy the Tripods … then yes … They are just big targets … |

I certainly think my Colonial British need another chance to field my semi-WWI tank again… |

What really interests me about the tripods, though, is the conditions under which they developed. Here on Earth, we find that ground vehicles get advantages from having a low center of gravity and from being short enough to take cover behind things. What conditions on Mars or among Martians make putting your crew and weapons on stilts a better option? |

Ran a 50s version based on the movie using 3 Pegasus 1/48 scale tripods on green tinted clear rod to simulate the tripod beams from the movie. Was pretty popular as a participation game. Split the troops into 3 units with a Corgi Sherman, bazooka team, medium mg and 10 rifleman each for 3 players and built a town with Sarissa buildings and 3 Streets for the Martians to attack down. Simple home brew rules and a game lasting about an hour. Fancy doing the same with Victorian period figures some time. |

I'd do a WWII version in a heartbeat, if the All Quiet on the Martian front Martians were a bit cheaper. |

What conditions on Mars or among Martians make putting your crew and weapons on stilts a better option? Having energy weapons an kinetic attack immune armour when your enemies don't. Basically a tripod is a cheaper, more robust low hover assault vehicle. |

Right. The atmosphere of Mars is too thin for aerodynamic flight, so no helicopters or fixed-wing aircraft. |
