Hi there

The zamburak camel-gunners in brown uniforms come from a European source that should be viewed with caution – the same artist's plates, from the 1850s, are / were reproduced showing other colours, red, blue for an image.

This looks something of a trend, plates could be given different colours in different publications for no clear reason.

The image of three zamburak gunners walking beside one mounted on his camel comes from Lady Mary Sheil, 1856.

She was housed near the zamburak barracks in Tehran and would have seen them in various roles or functions. The gunners were recorded as sometimes marching in parades dismounted with their weapon over the shoulder – as depicted – it does not reflect any tactical or organisational arrangement.
