If a miniature maker made high quality, multi-pose miniatures in your favorite period of history would you invest in a least 1 army for gaming purposes?

Puddinhead Johnson07 May 2019 2:03 p.m. PST

Nope.

Gone Fishing07 May 2019 2:07 p.m. PST

As I'm already invested in numerous periods in 54mm, I guess the answer is yes! I so love the scale that it is sometimes hard to get fired up for "smaller" projects. At least that's my experience.

Grelber07 May 2019 2:22 p.m. PST

I look at it from time to time. In addition to having "high quality, multi-purpose miniatures," they would have to be reasonably priced, which probably means some sort of plastic. Also, I would use them for smaller, skirmish type games

No, thanks: I'll stick with the six 54mm armies I already have:
ACW Union
ACW Confederate
Napoleonic French
Napoleonic British w/allies
AWI British w/Hessian
AWI American

Aethelflaeda was framed07 May 2019 2:51 p.m. PST

If I could race chariots and build a circus Maximus it might be the only way…but I gotta win the lottery to pay for the place to set it up..

It is just too big.

MajorB07 May 2019 3:01 p.m. PST

I have done in the past, but I no longer have the space.

forrester07 May 2019 3:26 p.m. PST

Long ago we used 1/32 WW2 Airfix with Donald Featherstone's Skirmish Wargaming. 28mm figures [and indeed some 20mm] now are so good that there is no great gain in detail by going bigger-if anything it would cruelly expose my limitations.

rustymusket07 May 2019 3:35 p.m. PST

Maybe for skirmish games, but 28mm works well for that already and enables a smaller table.

Old Contemptibles07 May 2019 3:54 p.m. PST

No

Whitewolf3607 May 2019 3:55 p.m. PST

I would if I had an opponent in my area who liked old school 54mm.

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP07 May 2019 4:06 p.m. PST

No, I'm not starting any new scales.

whitphoto07 May 2019 4:27 p.m. PST

I can do anything I want and you can't stop me!

huron725 Supporting Member of TMP07 May 2019 4:27 p.m. PST

Yes, I may. It all depends on the quality of the casting.

epturner07 May 2019 4:38 p.m. PST

I already do.

Running three 54mm WW2 games at Historicon with What A Tanker rules with infantry mods.

Also painting 54mm ACW with cheap plastics.

Stryderg07 May 2019 4:55 p.m. PST

Saw a ACW game setup at a con a few years ago. No one played. I don't know if it was because people already had their games scheduled, or they were just hanging with friends. Felt sorry for the guy that brought it all and set it all up, it was a nice table.

21eRegt07 May 2019 5:09 p.m. PST

Never in a million years.

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP07 May 2019 5:34 p.m. PST

After thinking about this and writing a few things the answer must be no because someone does make the figures and I didn't buy them.

KSmyth07 May 2019 5:35 p.m. PST

Nope, just too big.

Thresher0107 May 2019 6:08 p.m. PST

Yes, especially if they were affordable.

Glengarry507 May 2019 6:37 p.m. PST

I have no room to store 54MM figures and in particular 54MM terrain!

phssthpok07 May 2019 7:40 p.m. PST

I can and do!

cloudcaptain07 May 2019 7:45 p.m. PST

Already do and it has been very affordable. I game:

VSF and Pulp Colonials
Strange FIW
Retro Scifi
Scifi
Fantasy

…and I am planning on Weird WW2 soon.

Lascaris07 May 2019 8:25 p.m. PST

No for me. 28mm is as big as I go and I prefer 15mm for many periods.

Corporal Fagen07 May 2019 9:57 p.m. PST

Only if they were cheap, and I would need both sides. I currently have ACW, Boxer Rebellion, and cheap Cowboys and Indians

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP07 May 2019 10:01 p.m. PST

If I had the space, I'd do:

1) Later Samurai,
2) War of the Roses,
3) Pyrrhic War

Martin Rapier07 May 2019 11:22 p.m. PST

I've already got 54mm Armies using nice, cheap and highly durable plastic figures. I'd run a mile from any sort of multiple. I can just imagine all the rifle barrels breaking off with handling.

Rdfraf Supporting Member of TMP07 May 2019 11:44 p.m. PST

Yes! I started buying the metal 54mm ACW and AWI figures from All" the Kings Men" but gave up on the projects when they went out of business.

Green Tiger08 May 2019 1:09 a.m. PST

'High quality multipose figures'? – I have no interest in those – I wargame in 54mm with mostly Airfix figures…

ZULUPAUL Supporting Member of TMP08 May 2019 2:21 a.m. PST

Have played a couple of games in 54mm at convention as a lark but won't do that for myself. I'm not starting any new scales/projects.

Patrick R08 May 2019 3:14 a.m. PST

I'm still game for doing a cavalry vs indians game with the old Britain's Deetail cavalry figures.

Florida Tory08 May 2019 3:35 a.m. PST

My 18th century imagination army is 54mm.

Rick

No longer interested08 May 2019 3:42 a.m. PST

"high quality, multi-pose miniatures", do you mean action figures, like Gi-Joe?.

In any case: no. I would also have to change all the terrain to fit the minis.

Tom Reed08 May 2019 6:17 a.m. PST

Would love to, particularly in skirmish scale such as The Three Musketeers, but alas, I have almost no space for such.

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP08 May 2019 6:48 a.m. PST

No.

Considered 1/35 for WW2 skirmish back in the 70s and rejected in favour of 1/87 to have more maneuver room on the tabletop.

Been playing with plastic Army Men figures since 1997. Love it! Played the biggest game yet, two months ago: 13 feet by 30 feet table. Beach landing, assault up a hill, to reach a city. What a blast! Had 30 Tanks, artillery, and around 200 Infantry. Played two long days. More fun than a Human Being ought to be allowed…

Building/planning a city battle, same table size. Tanks and artillery ruled the beach landing game. This time, it will be up close, and personal, in the city. Turn a corner, and be face-to-face with the enemy! LOS will be short. Infantry will rule over Tanks; artillery will be extremely limited due to 3+ story buildings everywhere.

I use crude, toy Army Men figures, with undersized Tanks and other vehicles. It works for us. We don't need highly detailed miniatures. Heck, we don't even paint them anymore, since the paint rubs off after a few years, anyway. The Tanks are Dip'ed, and so are the other vehicles -- good enough for us. We use CRT's, not dirt clumps, nor tennis balls, to resolve combat. Play is fast, bloody, and damned fun! It's a fantastic scale to play in. Cheers!

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP08 May 2019 8:38 a.m. PST

@Green Tiger, I was just thinking of the multi-part figures that are available for most eras in 28mm now. That's the only reason I was that specific. For the sake of the poll if you wanted single pose 54mm plastic figures that could still be s "yes" vote.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP08 May 2019 9:25 a.m. PST

No I would not.

ACWBill08 May 2019 10:06 a.m. PST

I could if I wanted to, but not my bag baby!

Rich Bliss08 May 2019 10:11 a.m. PST

Already do

Gokiburi08 May 2019 10:36 a.m. PST

No, I like to keep things compact.

Gone Fishing08 May 2019 11:20 a.m. PST

All I can say is that I want to play in Sgt Slag's games.

Aethelflaeda was framed08 May 2019 11:55 a.m. PST

I am not even particularly likely to use 40mm

14th NJ Vol08 May 2019 3:46 p.m. PST

I have once. Enjoyed it, but wouldn't invest in the toys. I'm to deep into 15mm Napoleonics, 15mm & 28mm WW2 & 28mm ACW.

nickinsomerset09 May 2019 2:00 a.m. PST

Will probably use 1:35 stuff to play "What a tanker"

Tally ho!

Howler09 May 2019 6:16 p.m. PST

Nope

Der Krieg Geist30 Jul 2020 3:21 a.m. PST

Nah. :)

arthur181531 Jul 2020 1:45 a.m. PST

Only to play Little Wars in the garden. For anything else, I'll stick to 10mm for reasons of cost and space to play and store.

AICUSV01 Aug 2020 8:53 p.m. PST

I just built two 54mm forces. They were a lot of fun to do, but storage is an issue. I also noted that many of the figures I wanted to have aren't available. Converting figures runs into an issue with finding heads and equipments at a reasonable price. My forces were done using plastics figures, if I did the same thing in metal I couldn't have afforded it.

I would love for someone to make old school toy soldiers based upon European Nations around 1890-1900 in home service dress in 28mm.

deadeye48042 Supporting Member of TMP06 Sep 2020 2:17 p.m. PST

Would I build an army in expensive, multi-part figures; no. But I won't do it in less expensive hard plastic figures like the 28mm ones either. I have armies from Ancient to Modern and they are all 50-60mm soft plastic. There are a few expensive multi-part Expeditionary Forces figures, but most are Armies in Plastic, Marx repros, Barzso, BMC, Hat, Italieri, Call To Arms, Conti, Supreme and others I have acquired over 66 years. If I could get more figures like Conti's Anglo-Saxons which had some multi-parts and in that price range, I would do it.

As AICUSV said, STORAGE is the big problem. Especially for fortifications and buildings. I only need a 500 sq.ft. home with a 5000 sq.ft. basement.
