No Three Kingdoms 220–280 AD???

Although I do like the Early T'ang as well.

Of course after watching the series 'King's War' I also was impressed with General Han Xin who commanded during the Han Wu Contention at the end of the Ch'in and leading to the Han.

The Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms of Yunnan, for me – all that pretty red lacquered armour.

I like the Shang army. They are so mysterious. But its difficult to find an enemy for them.

Shang!

Have done some reading on the Shintashta culture and other Eurasian pastorialist societies, including discussions on how the chariot came to China. So, am slowly assembling a list of reasonable figures to acquire to build such a "Northern Nomad" army to fight the Shang. Then there is the one tantalizing image in the Osprey book of what a skins-clad Asian barbarian ought to look like, and am looking for figures that could serve there, too…

skipper John03 May 2019 5:43 a.m. PST

The Ming! Because they fought the Samurai… and what fun that is!!

Sui & Early Tang for Princess Pingyang.

Ming for the artillery.

Han in my Wrg playing days of the 1970s and 1980s.
Yuan are good but I am more of a Korean Three Kingdoms guy myself.

@Come In Nighthawk: That is a fascinating time. Have you seen Sawyer's book on the Shang? Reconstructing what the Qiang and other people wore could be a challenge, as if reconstructing the appearance of Shang troops wasn't already enough of a challenge!

Xia and Shang Chinese Army 2000 – 1300 BC
Western Zhou & 'Spring & Autumn' Chinese 1100 – 480 BC
Warring States & Qin Chinese 480 – 202 BC

The Nanyue Kingdom of "Early Vietnamese"

Dian & Kunming Chinese 295 BC – 45 AD
Han Chinese 202 BC – 189 AD

Nanzhao and Dali

mghFond04 May 2019 9:41 p.m. PST

Sung Chinese.

I use them against Mongols. It normally does not go well for the Chinese but it's a fun challenge to play the Sung.

Come In Nighthawk06 May 2019 8:26 p.m. PST

@ Skeptic. I assume you mean Ralph Sawyer's Ancient Chinese Warfare?

Mike O07 May 2019 7:13 a.m. PST

Song/Sung followed by Yuan although I'd call those medieval rather than ancient.

Skeptic07 May 2019 1:33 p.m. PST

@Come In Nighthawk Yes!

Come In Nighthawk07 May 2019 6:15 p.m. PST

Have it. Have not read it cover to cover. Hoping to meet Sawyer at a conference this summer and have a chat…

Skeptic07 May 2019 7:38 p.m. PST

I have just acquired a copy of his book on the Chou/Zhou Dynasty although I may seek a replacement from Amazon (flimsy envelopes don't protect softcover books very well…).

At a conference? That sounds interesting! May I ask what the conference will be about, or which conference it will be?

And Khurasan have just released a very pertinent range:

@Come In Nighthawk

Sawyer's book on the Zhou (Chou) mentions some inter-state connections between the Zhou and the more nomadic peoples. So, some of Khurasan's new range could likely also fit in with a Zhou army.

cuachicwarrior23 May 2019 7:24 a.m. PST

Hsia Hsia,Sung and Jin (jurchen) to fight against 1200's mongols

catavar03 Jun 2019 12:40 p.m. PST

Early Tang definitely; probably followed by Sung (even tho I like pronouncing Sui more… Swaaay). While not listed I think Nan-Chao are cool too.

Erzherzog Johann05 Jun 2019 9:04 p.m. PST

Spring and Autumn. How can you not love an army with a name like that? Plus all those pretty chariots . . . I don't have one; I've been waiting for Khurasan's long promised range. Now that it's here, and looks really good, that excuse has evaporated. So it's just the finances and the backlog of painting that are holding me back. Excuses excuses . . .

I also like the idea of the Sui Dynasty million man army but that will probably never happen.
