I went to Michael's today and asked the frame department if they had any scrap framing mat card stock, and she brought me out a box of card stock as well as some foam core.

You could also go to a framing store, they might be a little more helpful because they don't sell the materials you are asking for. They also have days that they throw the stuff out if you want to dumpster dive.

We get all our framing done at a local store, after asking a couple of years ago if they had any offcuts or scrap which they did not need I was given a big bag of offcut card. On subsequent visits I have not needed to ask and they just bag up what is around their workbenches and give it to me.
