Hey all!

I wrote an homage to Bernard Cornwell and Richard Sharpe a little while back, and while I did share it on my blog, I was really hoping to share it with folks who might read it and have some feedback!

Anyway… here is a link to it. It's not short, but I think it is a genuinely fun little read, so I hope people will give it a look, and of course share any feedback they may have!

Thanks!

So I will, putting "Over the hills and far away" as a background…

Not sure a captain would disparage the wills of his colonel in front of a lowly ensign; his friend Harper is different. Not to sabotage discipline/ confidence?

"But his ego wouldn't let that happen." ego; maybe not so good, especially negative about yourself if not with humour? professional self-respect?

In the beginning, something about hoofs lets us expects those brave Frenchmen are cavalry? then they turn out to be voltigeurs. Surely no movies with some mounted infantry…

And when he is asking the priest, as I would, how many French, what type…
For a good joke call your lt Brouillard it means fog; suited…
Hardly pigtails for a voltigeur, no? probably not that tall (he would be in the grenadier company).

I am sure he would have taken prisoners; paroled and or bound. Away without guns in Spain is worse than murder in the hands of guerillas. The brits were not too fond of that "unprofessional" way of war either.

The wine expert as a "target" was a brilliant idea. I liked the story.

One of my roles is to do book reviews, on almost a weekly basis, for a surgical journal. I also do peer reviews of articles submitted to three journals, one US and two UK.

So, I am impressed with Jcfrog. Very impressed.

This is a very perceptive and expert analysis. OK, horses who have more than one leg have Hooves, funny thing is that LHS buildings had roofs. God help students of English as a foreign language.

I hope your article gets further comment…and not just from the publishers of…(Oh forget it, they could never notice this and any breach of copyright is down to the Editor of TMP anyway….what is the worst that could happen to him…?)

Jcfrog30 Apr 2019 12:22 p.m. PST

If the publisher is a mite clever, and Cornwell sure is, they would like the indirect advertising;)

I did write… and plan to do more in D6 years…

Thanks for the notes, Frog!

About the horses… yeah, I think in the original idea it was some lost cavalry… but I changed that as I went, and forgot to account for that early on!:)

Sure, I get the point about Denny. Gotta go back and reread maybe, see how Sharpe was with the ensign.

Interesting thought re: ego.

Did volts not have braids? I didn't know that was only for grenadiers!

The prisoners thing was tough… I really don't want him coming back with prisoners, especially since he has such few men. Maybe I can work something in where there ends up being French nearby that he can send the prisoners?

Glad you enjoyed it, and thank you for the feedback! Did you feel like it was a good overall nod to Cornwells Sharpe? I was trying to hit all the familiar bits, you know? I think that came through?

Thanks again!

Braids? they cut their hair short as sound and practical if they could. The cadenettes Cornwell irritatingly wants his French to wear everywhere sometimes;)

It has been maybe 10 years since I read my last one, so a bit rusty.

AFAIK it sounds nicely Sharpish.
Interesting only 2 chaps answered you, c.f. my recent posts elsewhere;(
pretty sure the POW either he takes them or let them go.(armed- like in the Jungle).
