"At 7.17 pm on December 7, 1942, His Majesty's Submarine Tuna surfaced off the coast of Occupied France near the mouth of the River Gironde. Yes, a very bold operation but was costly to the attackers. Which sadly should not be unexpected with that type of operation. I read the book after I saw the movie. May they all RIP … |

The movie was OK, a bit jokey in places but it does give a good basic instruction into the raid. |

I first saw it during the summer holiday in 1978 or 79 and enjoyed it then, but as an adult it seems workmanlike but not great. I suppose the jokey element makes the tragedy at the end hit a little bit harder, but at least it tries to honour the chaps involved by following the events reasonably well. Mind you, for Spike Milligan Q series fans the phrase "it's Dave Lodge of Cockleshell Heroes!" will immediately spring to mind. |
