Freely admit my reading of the Civil War doesn't extend much past Osprey's and magazine articles, and the on-line glossaries really don't seem to get more technical than Harquebusier. What I'm after is any appropriate period terminology for scouts, sentries, etc. or a useful reference source.

Might I suggest the rather wonderful BCW Project (and regimental wiki) as a starting point wiki.bcw-project.org ? Have a look under 'military' before being sucked down the wormhole…

Hi ROU,

Scouts were scouts, seemingly, as there were Scoutmaster Generals, Samuel Luke was one. Might be termed spies by the opposition.

Sentries might be termed sentinels or centinells.

Thanks, I've used the BCW project regimental wiki quite a bit for basing labels and their military glossary already! An excellent source all round. 'Scoutmaster General' does ring a bell, and yes, where I've read about 'scouts' they do seem closer to spies than scouts in a more contemporary sense.
