We just got the new pricing information for Fine Detail Plastic in Smooth and Smoothest (formerly known as FUD and FED). Prices will change on April 29. Some prices will drop. Many will rise. In our shop, Smooth Fine Detail Plastic will have a minimum of $11.99 USD when we finish repricing. If your mini costs less than that now, consider buying it now. In our shop, Smoothest Fine Detail Plastic will have a minimum of $14.99 USD when we finish repricing. If your mini costs less than that now, consider buying it now. If the ship you are thinking of is one of our newer ones, consider waiting to combine it with an order for our newest releases on May 1. Many of those ships, but not all, will drop in price for those materials. Here is a list of the 101 ships that will go up the most in dollar increases as of April 29. If these are on your "want list," buy them now. The price increases are from about $14 USD to nearly $300 USD!!! (The list below is in alphabetical order to help you determine if your ship is on it.) Note that these are tending to be the biggest ships. Thanks for the warning. Wish there was a competitor, and/or more competition, in order to reduce pricing, instead of it going up all the time. Perhaps someone else will enter the market to make that a reality.

What we learned about the huge price increase in our ornament stand is that it is the perfect storm. It has a large footprint, it is tall, and it requires support material for the hook. Basically, it takes up a lot of machine space, so it is hitting one of Shapeways minimums which involves the cubic volume of the outer dimensions of the piece. This suggests that "airy" ships (ones with wide-spread engines that drop below, rise above, or extend far beyond the ship may end up being more expensive. Flying saucers … those may be relatively inexpensive if they are flatter.

Even Shapeways doesn't know what impact their new pricing formulas will have. They've admitted as much on the forums.

SITZKRIEG, this is to change the price increase in Fine Detail Plastic. Once we removed the items that hit the new minimums, we had 1668 line items. (This is high because for many items there are two lines: Smooth and Smoothest.) 63% are within the expected price increase range of 30% or less. 24% held steady or dropped in price. We are still experiencing sticker shock on the items listed above. We may be looking into ways to reduce the price for folks willing to do some assembly, but that isn't certain yet.

I'm considering printing masters of my more popular models and transitioning over from selling prints to casting and selling models in metal and/or resin. Really wondering what's up with the price increases from Shapeways. Did they initially set prices below their breakeven point to achieve market penetration, is this an attempt to increase profits, or is the company running into cashflow problems?

SP, I think it's an attempt to get out of the 'bits' and model business, being a very low-profit-margin thing that apparently took up a lot of machine time for them.
