Just what is the guy – second from left – wearing for head gear? The crest is painted as a brown/tan, but that seems to me even more unusual.

An old potemkin uniform helmet?

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP21 Apr 2019 10:20 a.m. PST

Looks to me like a felt hat with fur or wool strapped around it, kinda like ear muffs.

Surely. Ear muffs worn tied up.

'er indoors bought me a furry hat for Moscow and Leningrad (OK, I know St Ps) about five/six years ago. Been there before with both earlier wives in winter. This then was February and, fabulous clear skies, but the coldest I have ever experienced there. -23C in Red Square and my Altama US Marine boots froze in minutes. They cracked right across the instep by the time we got into GUM. I still wear them for the garden, but these are 20th C tech kit (OK for the desert, but still, cannot survive those conditions).

Anyway, my hat. I swore I would not be seen dead in this hat, let alone with the flaps down. Like his. I rapidly learnt. Down they came

Surely. Ear muffs worn tied up.

As I said, it looks like wool or fur tied around the head.
Problebly because he seems to wear just a felt hat, and that's not very warm.

Ritter is correct – it's the Potemkin uniform helmet – I know nothing about the Russo Turkish War and had thus never come across it.

That is an odd design, sure 'nuff!

Well I will concede this, but also say that, on a scale on 1 to 10, that is a piece of military headgear that rates a -1. I thought some of the Perry Scandinavian figures looked like something out of a pantomime…but this poor chap.

You know all those fora that ask about the best turnout of the Napoleonic Wars…….?

Could we start one for the very worst rig in which to meet your maker?

What do you have against the beautiful Scandinavian head gear, it's all perfectly normal stuff, tophats, shakoes, bicornes, grenadier bearskins and the sexy tarleton.

Check out DAN4 in the Perry range. Those poor Norwegian Grenadiers. Their only hope is the opposition are just creased up and weeping with laughter, quite unable to load.

How can anyone have been so cruel?

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP22 Apr 2019 10:29 a.m. PST

It's just a 1806 prussian grenadier hat.

In fact the entire dano-Norwegian army seems to just be a copy of 1806 Prussia.

If it is, then, I almost imagine these chaps saying "EEEH, I got caught in the rain today and I simply cannot do a thing with it" This is a Prussian Grenadier on a bad hair day

Only difference is the fur is white instead of black.

Hello, Only just noticed the thread. It is an old Potemkin cap from the 1780's. He's supposed to be an old ex-soldier.

His mother should have told him "You are not going out in that hat".

The Perry 1812 range is just superb though. Some great imagination gone into the posing; not just the very familiar figures recycled.
