Did the Iron Marshal and the Iron Duke ever meet?

JimDuncanUK20 Apr 2019 2:48 p.m. PST

Not sure I know who the Iron Marshal is.

Assuming this is Davout (a personal favourite), never on the battlefield. They may have met during Wellington's time in France after the wars but I have never seen it recorded.

Davout.

I presume you mean on a battlefield? No…….he was only involved in Eastern European campaigns and notably left behind in 1815. He was involved in the final defence of Paris after Waterloo, but does not really count.

If you mean socially……very tricky and entirely possible

No I mean "socially"
They have certain similar personalities.

Soult famously met Wellington, as you all know. Interesting exchange there.

Musketballs20 Apr 2019 7:07 p.m. PST

Not sure how well Soult took the implication that he was extremely skilled at retreating…

I believe Wellington and Foy got on well and met a number of times after Waterloo.

IIRC, the biography of Davout that I recently read made mention of the two meeting socially.

They definitely did not meet on the battlefield, although that would make an interesting battle.
