What does someone need in 15mm or 20mm for Africa-esque tabletop gaming in terms of figures and vehicles to make a decent game of it in 1970s-1980s?

It might be apparent already, but assume I know nothing about the armies of the period, what vehicles/Armor both sides might have had and nothing about the rules or materials necessary for Peter Pig AK47 battles with them.

Also, what's the lay of the land in terms of vehicles and figures for 15mm or 20mm and is either scale superior for these rules?

For AK-47 anything goes its pretty much Cold War era African immigi-nations. the rules are generic so a tank is a tank, an APC is an APC and so on regardless of the model you use. The rules are pretty open on force composition as well you get five units that can contain pretty much anything you like with in your points though you will want to keep some points back for the pre game politics.

I had an army made up of surplus WW2 British paras with centurions and ferrets. another army of Vietnam era Americans backed up by some spare Shermans and jeeps with MGs. I had cold war era soviets with T55s. And African militia with T34s and pick ups.

Scale wise 15mm is a good fit a Peter pig make everything you need.

Basically AK-47 is a fun game but if you want a detailed set of realistic modern rules they won't suit.

You can match the lists to the catalog.

Peter Pig makes already makes everything in 15mm. And he is a regular on this forum.

Ah yes, thanks @Walking Sailor.

I am not really a realism hound in this space, just want some fun sort of like the war scenes in Blood Diamond. Some Bush terrain on a desert map a few vehicles chasing each other around and lots of African militia coming at worried National troops.

I just bought this book for mood lighting: link

You don't need tons of stuff for AK47. Units are quite small in the main, and 15mm is ideal.

I Did just buy the rules but I havent had time to examine them and I didnt cursorily see army lists. Thus, I have no idea what's required for a smallish game. Also, I have painters do up my stuff, so it pays to know a little bit about what I am going to need before I start out.

It's looking like 4 or 5 African militia infantry maybe a couple of Russian or Cuban units, a few Russian tanks vs some sort of South African squad of 4 or 5 units with a couple of tanks and Ratels or whatever. I really dont know at this point.

There is only really one size of game in AK-47 both sides get five units made up of a number of infantry stands and vehicles. The size of your units will depended on the quality of the unit militia are cheap, regulars and professionals cost more points. So if you want to keep the number of figures down to start with a Colonial Settlers army (think south Africa or Rhodesia) as they get plenty of good quality troops so you need less stuff to get started.

I am looking at Peter Pig site and it sells all sorts of prepackaged army lists, referring to them as an army on page such and such of the rules? But there doesnt seem to be an army list in my rules.

I see also advertisements for Peter Pig figures in the rules too which would be great…if there was also some army lists.

Maybe my rules are incomplete?

Take a closer look in your rules, MiniPigs, the army lists are pretty short and only take about 10 pages total.

Though I do have the second edition in paper.

It may be I didnt identify the Army Lists, they are at a greater level of abstraction than I am used to. It's more like army guidelines. I see vehicles and infantry can sometimes be mixed and not always just for motorised infantry. I guess I need to read through them from front to back.

Martin Rapier19 Apr 2019 12:02 a.m. PST

Yes, you make up your own Armies based on the list and points restrictions. I've got about four different combinations, and they all fit happily into two box files.

If you go for vehicles and regular/professional troops you really don't need much stuff at all.

Also play close attention to the pre-game phase of your chosen faction as you can gain and lose stuff from your army before battle. Its always worth having a few extra stands and vehicles in case your pre-game goes well and you gain some extra tanks from the black market or extra infantry from an inspiring religious leader.

Hello
the armies detailed in the website are for the re-loaded AK47 edition 2009. The 2009 edition also has more detailed army lists if that helps?

Have fun

I read the rules through, they're very cool. Now I need to free a painter up to do some units so I can play them.
