I have a figure whose face, I would like to do a really good job. I've been watching all sorts of YouTube videos and what I've learned is that if there are 300 such videos there are three hundred different ways. But one of the things I've noticed is that they all tend to mix/blend there paint with the very brush that they will use to paint the miniature. But what I find most odd is that they seem not to care that they get paint up and on the ferrule. I've told since I was a little kid in kindergarten that you never let the paint get more than half way up the bristles, does matter if you're using water colors or house paint, it will destroy the brush. Is this simple another lie that I've been believing in for 50 years?

You are right – paint in the ferrule reduces the brush life.

I normally use the same brush to mix paint that I will use to do the painting, but I don't put a brush contaminated with a different colour into a pot of paint.

Agreed, I try not to get paint in the ferrule, however it does happen. I also try and clean my brush as often as possible, using brush soap.

They could also be rich, and can throw away brushes after a few uses… ;-)

Are you guys painting the Sistine Chapel or what? How can you get that much paint in the ferrule? I dip the tip of my brush in the paint, not the whole thing! And since I paint with the tip down, I rarely get much if any paint in the ferrule. Frequent washing the tip in clean water also helps.
