The Thousand Sons and Vlyka Fenryka were at it again on Sunday.
We used the 8th edition 40K rules to play this Horus Heresy game to see how it would work out.
It played a lot like the book read actually. I want to introduce Sisters of Silence the next time we do it so that the Chastisement forces have more of a chance, as the psykers ripped the Rout and the Custodes apart.
The Spireguard did remarkably well in the first round, trading fire with a Terminator squad and inflicting more damage than they took.
They were subsequently wiped out to a man, but as a forelorn hope they did pretty well.
This was the first time I've used any vehicles in an 8th edition game. I'm not impressed with how the rules work for them. It occurred to me, while the game was going on, that a dreadnought with a multi-melta didn't stand a chance of destroying a rhino with one shot.
It isn't even like it was highly unlikely, it was actually impossible.
Thinking about this later I realized that a space marine devastator squad with 4 lascannons were not likely to destroy a rhino in one round of shooting without the special rules they have. Even then they only just destroy it.
This doesn't seem right. If we move forward with 8th edition we will probably try to fix this somehow, possibly by using an exploding die rule for weapons, so if they roll a 6 for damage, they get to roll again without limit, allowing a lascannon to destroy a land raider with one shot if they get lucky.
Overall though it was a very fun game. Pretty much more enjoyable than previous games using the 3rd/7th edition rules we have been using before. I think that was due to the Thousand Sons being so much tougher. The rules are not really designed to work like Thousand Sons from 30K but if you have them be from the Pyrae cult it actually works pretty well, saying that their weapons are somehow shooting flaming bolts and they have some sort of flameshield around the units permanently.
