Have some irish kerns to do. Thinking I should start with a brown basecoat, then go over it in yellow hilites?

Would that give the best results? I'd like the yellow to be noticeable, but not neon.

Try a yellow ochre for the yellow.

Just a basecoat of yellow or a yellow ochre as Swampster suggests then armypainter quickshade and a final coat of matte finish (dull cote brush on is what I use) is fairly easy and looks quite nice.

You don't say what paint you use – if you're an old school enamel man like me then Humbrol 81 is ideal – IMO.

One of the Vallejo Ochre Brown or Ochre yellows are good too
