The military use of smoke signals by Australian Aborigines got a mention in Dr Ray Kerkhove's paper of some years ago,'A Different Mode of War'. Also available online is a 2015 article by the same author that greatly expands upon the subject 'Aboriginal Smoke Signals and Signalling Hills During Resistance Warfare'.
