Minis is my Waterloo Supporting Member of TMP29 Mar 2019 8:42 p.m. PST

I'm about to start painting my first British Napoleonic army, beginning with Brit and KGL line and light foot, and I'm trying to decide on the best color to prime them. I hate to prime white…too much chance of missed spots popping out later. Black is my usual color for most periods, as I like to leave it in cracks and crevices like a reverse black lining. Gray, so I'm a step ahead on painting their pants?

Any suggestions or advice?

I basecoat my redcoats in a deep red, maroon or claret and then the trousers in dark grey or light grey depending on Waterloo or Peninsula.

I then highlight in a brighter red and a lighter grey/white.

Rust/brick brown.

I always do white prime. Followed by skin tone on the hands and heads. Then a brick red coat for the uniform base.

White. Anything else makes the top colours dull, especially red. Unless you want a dull appearance of course.

I'm another who always primes white – it has many advantages over black. I paint in the shadow tones I want first – that avoids the white spots happening.

Red paint covers terribly, so even though I'm a black base coater, I do a layer of rust brown over the black before doing red jackets.
