Here in Calif 5150 is the legal code section that basically means "danger to themselves or others"

Is this a coincidence?

No.

There was a lot of discussion when those rules came out. The intro fluff in the first 5150 went along the lines of a local policeman about to enter a bar because a Grath was causing trouble. Grath are symbiotes and you need two "obviously dead" damage results to take them down, ie. roll to hit, roll a 1 for damage, then do it again.

I guess the name stuck because wargamers can be danger to themselves or others (being war mongers, glorifying war, etc).

Ed said it was because of the Van Halen album, which in turn took it from the police code. So make of that what you will.

I guess you can be committed involuntarily if you're a danger to yourself or others under section 5150:

One could probably do an interesting RPG scenario out of a 5150 call. If the person who is a danger has superpowers -- Scott Summers or Johnny Storm maybe -- it could turn into a miniatures game.

5150 was chosen on the California Code, as was the Van Halen album. Here it is from the original 5150, used to reflect what can happen during the game.

5150. "When any Basic or Alien, as a result of mental disorder, is a danger to others, or to himself or herself or itself, or gravely disabled; a peacekeeper, or other professional person designated by the governing body, may, upon probable cause, take, or cause to be taken, the Basic or Alien into custody and place him or her or it into a facility designated by the governing body for 72-hour treatment and evaluation."

5150 became the name for the Sci Fi universe so you see Star Army, Fleet Commander as well as Urban Renewal, the city that 5150 is based around.
