Both sci-fi shows involved a space station. Which show did you prefer?

Another vote for B5. The specal effects on B5 where not as good as DS9, hover the story line was much better.

B5. The first show where there was an extended story thread. I recall the shock of having something that happened five episodes ago suddenly have big significance. Before that shows were just stand alones or two parters at best.

I did however enjoy DS9 until the end when it got too weird for me.

DS9 DID have it's moments/shows, but again B5 was always consistent!

Let's be honest. The first season of Babylon 5 started out HORRIBLY. The Commander walked and talked like was trying to sell deodorant. Others chewed the scenery so much you were surprised there weren't holes in the wall. The whole "down below" "homeless" parts of the station were absurdly illogical, despite the attempt to explain them in (see "AIR AIN'T FREE" on the Atomic Rocket page). And many of the episodic plots were just recycled, bad ‘60s space opera. But then something happened and things started to twist, the actors got better (or got replaced), and from there on the show became steadily greater and greater…until the lousy final "historical flashback" episode in Season 4.

DS9 began with superior actors (and sets), but equally weak episodic plots. But then it, too, began to build as the Founders/Dominion started creeping into the plots. And once the war was full bore, you had episodes like "By the Pale Moonlight," which remains among the best sci-fi stories (almost film noir) ever done for television.

The truth is you have to give both series time to find their footing and build. Are there stinker moments along the way? Most definitely. Are they both good, in the end? (Ignoring the last episodes of both.) Yes.

I don't have a favorite among them. My wife and I enjoy watching both (though we certainly find DS9 more palatable in the beginning than the ham-handed early episodes of B5).

All that for a solid "Both!" vote.

B5 for complete series. DS9 had some good episodes, but not enough consistency for my tastes.

DS9.

Never finished watching B5. We have watched DS9 twice, going through it a third time. After TOS, I think it the best ST series of the three (new current series is terrible, never got into the Bakula series). Cheers!

> Let's be honest. The first season of Babylon 5 started out HORRIBLY. The Commander walked and talked like was trying to sell deodorant.

Can't argue with that, I stopped watching the show after a couple of episodes and then gave it another shot in Season 3 when things REALLY picked up. After doing that going back to season 1 looks much better – things that would have been one off comments and done in the background of the main plot of the episode take on important meanings in later seasons. The third season also has my favorite "Kirk Speech" – when Sheridan is summing up how it is wrong to hate those who have paid for their crimes, and before he can finish has it thrown back in his face.

StoneMtnMinis, I like your style :)

But I have to say B5 in preference to DS9, mostly because the former had fewer racist/bigot characters thate we weren'y expected to lionize, and yet had more realitsic characters ( Even those with alien motivations ).
