I was in a training class on police officer safety today and the instructor provided this quote: "If the odds are even, your tactics suck." Unfortunately I don't recall who he was quoting. |

Definitely sounds like a paraphrase but I couldn't tell you from whom. Napoleon? Frederick? Patton? |

Apparently almost everyone has said something approximately like your quote. For example, the following is attributed to Col. David Hackworth: "If you find yourself in a fair fight, you didn't plan your mission properly." See azquotes.com/quote/566499 The Hackworth quote is ascribed to him in Paul Walters' book "A Soldier's Journey to Vietnam and Back." Although I found lots of references to Steinbeck being the source of the OP's quote-as Bill noted-I couldn't actually trace it to a book by or about Steinbeck. |

Yeah, like Sherman was the first to say "War is hell."? Not likely but he is remembered (in the US, anyway) |

Although new to me, this appears to be something said my many people in different ways. But either way, the sentiment is awesome. |

Self-defense instructors have said words to the effect of: "the guy on the street isn't looking for a fair fight; he's looking for a beat-down. Fair fights only happen in tournaments." |
