Not always. They regularly put in an appearance in our games in Brown Deer, WI.

And I have had some in my "jungle" games, also lions, cape buffalo, elephants, and other assorted animals.

That must have truly sucked for the guys having to go through it. I mean, even more than the typical suck-age of being in a war.

On a visit to Southeast Asia in 2015 I had the chance to visit a mangrove swamp that had a convenient wooden walkway built through it. Interesting to see the black mud below and to look out into the mangroves and not see much beyond the first few trees. Just a green hell. I later saw a number of crocodiles from a safe distance.

After that I began reading on the Ramree Island incident. I found three novels/novellas on the Japanese retreat- The Mangroves by John Campbell, Sunset on the Ramree by Robert Appleton, and Dragon of the Mangroves by Yasuyuki Kasai. I can recommend all three.

Almost 50% dead. Reminds me of the Indianapolis.

I grew up in south Florida near the Everglades and went hunting there. One day while on a little pram in a canal I shot a duck that went into the weeds near the bank. I was in the bow and told my buddy to ram the boat into the weeds so I could retrieve my duck. All of a sudden there was a splash and a gator tail was coming towards me and I almost fell out of the boat. I watched helplessly as the gator made off with my dinner. At least I wasn't dinner.
