Looking for Civil War era N scale static train, does not have to run.
Any suggestions?

Shapeways to the rescue…? link

Years ago when I tried to do this, I only found one ACW era engine available commercially in N scale, an extremely expensive custom brass model. Mass production scale steam engines only seem to go back to the early 1900s.

Good luck. I hope to see pictures of what you come up with. I might revisit this topic myself if things have improved.

The Bachmann 4-4-0 has been in production for many years. Used ones (running poorly or not at all) used to be common at train shows in New England. At one point I had so many I was chopping them up for kit-bashing projects.

You might try scrounging around in toy departments. Sometimes you get lucky.

Some years ago (long enough that I unfortunately do not remember the name of the manufacturer) I picked up a train in the toy aisle of a Walmart for $4.95 USD. It's not very authentically ACW and I had to add the stack and the cowcatcher, but it works as a terrain piece and, at the price, it's hard to complain.
