"There may have been only one battle in the State of Iowa during the Civil War but that doesn't mean the state and its people didn't play a significant role. More than 75,000 Iowans participated in the four bloodiest years of our nation's history – the highest per capita on either side of the war. The Civil War began with the bombardment of Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861 and ended with the surrender of General Stand Watie on June 23, 1865. It was during that time, Iowa sent 48 Infantry Regiments, four artillery batteries, nine cavalry regiments, and one African infantry regiment to help save the Union. "About three-quarters of the male population in Iowa, 76,534 went to fight in the Civil War," said Michael Carr, a Civil War re-enactor and member of the West Iowa Brigade of the Sons of Union Veterans. "We also lost 13,169, one out of every six, which is the highest percentage of casualties, and that doesn't include those there came down sick or were disabled."…" Main page link Amicalement Armand |
