If we include screen plays under the heading of literature, then I would have to say the Vietnam War because Billy Jack was supposed to be a Green Beret veteran. It would be hard to do worse than Billy Jack: YouTube link

Agree with Gunfreak. The ACW spawned a huge amount of terrible fiction, most of it now thankfully forgotten. And a lot of the "non-fiction" was pretty awful, too.
