In your collection of painted armies/figures, do you have Mongols?

Winston Smith28 Feb 2019 5:47 p.m. PST

No. Never did.
The rules I used to use made them a 1-trick pony.
Plus, they were rated "Regular B", which made them too expensive for what they could do.

tigrifsgt28 Feb 2019 5:53 p.m. PST

Is there a doubt. The best horse archers who ever lived and ruled most of what was then the known world. Both boxes of the FF plastic plus a few others, and a box of GB Arabs converted to Mongol allies with all the left over FF parts.

Not yet but I am sorely tempted with the Fireforge sets

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP28 Feb 2019 6:24 p.m. PST

No, I have never had Mongols. I have both OS and NG Klingons, however, and Vargr. All of them are just standing figures, however.

Syrinx028 Feb 2019 6:29 p.m. PST

Never had them. Never played a campaign that would use them.

mad monkey 128 Feb 2019 6:31 p.m. PST

Yes, and music to use them by:

von Schwartz28 Feb 2019 6:59 p.m. PST

Do tatars count? Used them in a non-historical against Scots-Irish, yeah I know, weird eh. Anyway the BPI forgot that although the light cavalry was prohibited from making frontal attacks against formed troops, there was nothing wrong with attacking their rear, which they did. Ouch man!

Rich Bliss28 Feb 2019 7:28 p.m. PST

Yes, but late 19th/early 20th century.

Ragbones28 Feb 2019 7:42 p.m. PST

Yup. An old Mikes Models Mongol army to battle my Teutonic Knights, Novgoroddian Rus and Polish armies. Inspired by a series of articles in The Courier, the fictitious Feudal-era Marnon Campaign.

I just finished painting 50+ Mongols complete with camel drummer! All Fireforge. Theyb will be debuting at Trumpeter Salute in April in Vancouver, BC.

Winston Smith28 Feb 2019 8:28 p.m. PST

I sense a great "Orietal armies are far too superior Western armies because ….. just because" theme here.

Why are Mongol horse archers superior to Huns or Scythian?
Just because?

goragrad28 Feb 2019 8:35 p.m. PST

Have a few painted that I got with other figures off ebay.

And enough unpainted to put together at least a BBDBA army as opponents for my other Book IV armies.

Kevin C28 Feb 2019 8:38 p.m. PST

Maybe I am just bias because I live in the heart of Comancheria, but my guess is that man for man the Comanche surpassed the Mongols in both horsemanship and archery. That said, I do have a few boxes of the Fireforge Mongols waiting to be painted.

Oldgrumbler28 Feb 2019 8:48 p.m. PST

redbanner414501 Mar 2019 6:25 a.m. PST

My Mongols have been all the horse archers from 300 BC Skythians to 1500 AD Transylvanians. Alas they aren't mounted right to fight as Kalmuks.

Waco Joe01 Mar 2019 8:07 a.m. PST

Yep, 20mm plastic.

nsolomon9901 Mar 2019 4:31 p.m. PST

Yes, of course. In 15mm. Hordes of them.

And I have Mamelukes to oppose them but am yet to find a good set of rules that has the right flavour. The DBx series are pathetic rues for Mongols but I'm hopeful To the Strongest may capture the feel. Just haven't had the time to try them, too many other projects.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP02 Mar 2019 8:48 a.m. PST

The closest I have are Feral Orks … or just Orks in general. evil grin

mghFond02 Mar 2019 1:47 p.m. PST

I have Mongols and their Sung Chinese opponents. We play To the Strongest rules with them. The Mongols are really tough as they should be.
So far I think the Sung have lost like 12 or 13 times and won 2.

But probably as it should be. I do enjoy the challenge of trying to win as the Sung though. :)

DOUGKL04 Mar 2019 6:36 p.m. PST

Yes, there opponents have been Hungarians, Teutonic knights, Russ, Saracens and Byzantines.

The Last Conformist16 Mar 2019 3:54 a.m. PST

I've got quite a few in 15mm. They've also served as various other nomads, most recently Shatuo.

(As to why Mongols would be better horse archers than Scythians or Huns, the design of composite bows improved over time, so unless you posit that the users became less expert to compensate, well, yes, they will have been.)

bobm195928 Mar 2019 5:58 a.m. PST

The technical advance they made to the nocks of the bow meant (they rotated as drawn) they could hold their aim at full draw far more easily than with the older design…
