I don't have any actual knowledge, but from a quick review of the laws of gravity – – – I suspect that it couldn't be used like that, or the weight of the exposed belt would drag more ammo out until it hit the ground.

Yes, the PKM ammo feed system is real, google "Scorpio". Very interesting, and no doubt ultra heavy. There's space for one on my table.
