This is the ultimate in "trivia", but why not. At least here we stand some chance. Most North Yorks pub quizzes leave me baffled. All about "celebrities" and their affairs etc…. |

Just a point: The Middle Guard doesn't seem to have been officially activated…so in the movement order for the campaign, we find the guard marching – Young Guard – All the Chasseurs – All the Grenadiers. But…Napoleon's post-Waterloo bulletin talks about the Middle Guard attacking. It's possible he reactivated it after the event as a handy scapegoat, I suppose. However, Ney, in his answer to the bulletin, also distinguishes between the Middle Guard he led, and the Old Guard in reserve behind them. Given that part of his motivation for writing the latter was to correct what he saw as unfounded calumnies against the troops, it hardly seems likely that he summarily demoted the Guardsmen he led to Middle Guard. Seems like a Middle Guard was recognised on the ground, even though it didn't exist on paper. |

8/10. Should have had 9 but I read one question too casually. |

The Middle Guard were different formations at different times. Originally the 2nd Chasseurs and 2nd Grenadiers were Middle Guard but these were disbanded, then reformed and in 1813 designated Old Guard. In addition to these there were regiments of Fusilier-Chasseurs and Fusilier-Grenadiers who were upgraded to Middle Guard status in 1811. In 1815 the latter were not reactivated but the 2nd regiments of the grenadiers and chasseurs were. They had been Old Guard since 1813. The formations that attacked Wellington's line were Old Guard. Davout was Minister of War and he never mentioned any Middle Guard in 1815. I will take Davout's view over Ney's and, yes, even over Napoleon's. Part of the confusion is historical and part is perhaps administrative. Officers and NCOs in the former Middle Guard units were rated individually as Old Guard. Part is probably embarrassment masquerading as confusion. The Old Guard were beaten in 1815 by Prussian reserve infantry, by Chassé's Dutch infantry and by the Foot Guards, whose numbers at Waterloo had been swelled by the transfer into their ranks of large numbers of Berkshire militia. On balance it's not hard to see why some might have preferred these troops to have defeated the Middle rather than the Old Guard. |

I will take Davout's view over Ney's and, yes, even over Napoleon's. That's generally a good rule in all things. |

4th – all good points except I wasn't sure why you said the reserve infantry had beaten the OG. My reading is that the OG held onto Plancenoit until the very end. Marc |
4th Cuirassier | 25 Feb 2019 6:48 a.m. PST |
@ Marc ISTR that the 18th Regiment threw back a battalion of OG and that this precipitated the French retreat from Plancenoit. |

Is there an account somewhere of Duchard's battery? I am always very interested when artillery is claimed to have set up within 100m of enenmy troops. |
