Seven years after the fall of the French monarchy in 1792, following his coup d'etat of November 1799 [which overthrew the Directory – the government of France – replacing it with the French Consulate and bringing Napoleon to power as First Consul of France], Bonaparte relaunched monarchy in the heart of the French Republic…."

Pop history at its best… or worst. Another riveting example of History Lite with the usual Brit-centric bias for the undiscerning masses. I have never minded alternate, disapproving opinions of Napoleon; in fact, for every laudatory view, there should be an opposite view. However, I take a rather dim view of fantasies, good or bad. Mansel has clearly joined the ranks of Hibbert, with overtones of Corelli Barnett. I am underwhelmed. |
