So, this is one of those dumb questions that occupy an unreasonably large amount of my brain's processing power. I was reading the Soldier's Companion book for Space:1889, and they mentioned German regular troops serving off-planet (I presume this means Mars or maybe Venus) wear grey-green with
spiked helmets. Is there any historical verification for this uniform being used in real life? I know Germany was experimenting with field grey by 1900, but wouldn't the spiked helmet be incredibly uncomfortable in a jungle or desert climate? The only time I've ever seen this being portrayed is in John Milius's The Wind and the Lion…which isn't exactly true to history. What do you all think?

I don't know if I appreciate you denigrating the Greatest movie ever [grin], but the first thing I think of is the old Ballantine book, Tanganyikan Guerrilla.

And then there is this old Funcken drawing:

So apparently the German also thought that the spiked helmet was inappropriate for overseas duty. However, if you can get to Mars, you can wear any type of headgear you want.

Here's some Germans in feld grau:

There are many "Historical" options

Most common are Hechtgrau and Feldgrau

Or Pike-gray and Field-gray each of which are green and gray

A great source of inspiration is:

Much of the inspiration for Space 1889 and the guide the Soldier's Companion book came from the movie "the wind and the lion" most pointedly the Germans
This movie has several colonial powers fighting each other in a desert setting.

Clearly the spike helm as in the continental army, but tannish uniforms like some of the Schutztruppe (or maybe just WWII Africa Corps).

That helmet spike looks like it was added so you could tell which nation the khaki-clad troops belonged to.

A spike reads German pretty well, even if the other armies had them briefly as well.

So, you think the pickelhaubes in the Wind and the Lion is mostly based in "Rule of Cool" rather than any historical reality?

No need for reality in a fantasy film like the Wind and the Lion. But one does have to admit that if conveys the point that these are the Germans, and they are the bad guys.

The beauty of alternative history and especially VSF, like Space 1889, is you can use as much or as little historic reality as you like. For my stuff I did folks up like Boxer Rebellion, but if you like WWI looking Germans, go for it!

Wait a darn minute here, you're talking about 1889 military manual for Space combat and then asking what would correct historical colors be?!?!?!

HEAD spins around 360 degrees!!!

Nothing historical about that scenario at all!
