I recently completed these two tripods that I purchased a couple of years ago.

I have always loved this vintage style of the tripod walker:

Buck, do you recall who made this kit/miniature?

Found a nice DIY site for this style:

Ended up looking like:

I don't recall the manufacturer, but I'll look and see if I can locate it. They came in pretty nondescript white boxes.

Found them! Ironclad Miniatures. See them here: link

They also have some other suitable quirky-looking vehicles.

Very cool.

They don't make any sense on Earth, but they look cool. What were the conditions on Mars that gave an elevated target on long legs military value? Do they not have rope, nets, or holes on Mars for entangling the legs? Do they not have direct fire weapons that can take advantage of the easy target presented by the body of the tripod? Do they have very tall trees, or very tall rock formations, that make the body not tower over the landscape?

A fight between tripods probably starts with them blasting each other's legs. Whoever knocks out a leg first can then destroy the fallen tripod easily.

The extensive swamps and wetlands of Mars make such legs quite useful.

As I recall, in the War of the Worlds book, the Earthlings did take out one or two of the tripods with towed artillery pieces. That's when they started using poison gas.

In general, I am not a fan of large stompy robots and walking vehicles, as I think they are overly expensive, so the cost-benefit still favors wheels, tracks, and MAYBE hover cars. Still, there is nothing so deafeningly VSF as the classic Wells tripod.

Yes. They are indeed impractical.
Now go out and defeat them. grin

Very nice indeed!

Long legs are handy dealing with all those canals on the home world. But I wonder what started the war? Was it the missing space modulator?

Great work, nice Tripods!
I like Ironclad Miniatures range of figures/vehicles…
Cheers!
