I just read that Horse Island off of Sackets Harbor has been purchased by New York State with a grant from the American Battlefield Trust so it can be preserved as part of the Sackets Harbor battlefield. As a side note, spent more then a few nights in my teenage years boating from our cottage over to Horse to party, I mean drink sodas, with friends. |

That is very good news! When I visited Sackett's Harbor on a Battlefield tour over ten years ago, I remember that the mainland coastal area adjacent to Horse Island was private property. So, you could not get a close up view of the sand bar where the 100th Grenadiers charged across to the mainland from Horse Island. |

About 10 years ago I was writing an article for the 200th anniversary of the battle. One fall I was walking the area and met the owner of that property. He let me walk up to the shore and showed me were the sand bar is located. Even with low water levels in was hard to find. Dalewill. |
