I had done some minor rust effects on various models using my own mix of copper and brown Citadel paints, but this was my first attempt at using an actual weathering product on a significant level.

I bought Vallejo's Environment rust effects. It is quite a thin and runny liquid. I just basically took a couple different sized brushes and began experimenting with it.

I found that it can be used in more or less three different ways: at full strength where you want to have extreme rust effects running along an edge or on a surface, stippled with either a brush or sponge for creating spot rusting, and then finally as a drybrush where you wipe most of it off the brush and then scrub it into corners and crevices and over surfaces for a general rust/corrosion/fading effect.

I tried these techniques on GW's 40k Alchomite Stack terrain kit.

Overall I think the Vallejo effects look quite good. I tried not to overdo the effects and I tried to vary how I applied it so that it looked like different levels of rust and corrosion on the metal surfaces.

To get this final effect on the terrain pieces overall I started with a spray primer of light gray, then a heavy wash of Secret Weapon armor wash, then a light gray drybrush over the entire model, then a black stippling with a sponge, and then finally the Vallejo rust effects.

The combined layers really help this industrial terrain look well-weathered and worn. The black stippling in particular gave it a nice appearance of paint chipping off and the drybrushing made it all appear grungy and dirty, much like an old railroad car or abandoned factory. Trying this gave me enough confidence to use it on future projects!
