Raven Banner Games is considering launching a line of 28mm metal figures for the 2nd Seminole war, perhaps through a kick starter for Dade's Massacre.

Is there interest in this period in 28mm? If so, what figures or poses would you like to see?

Mr J197004 Feb 2019 7:57 a.m. PST

Count me in, at the moment making use of a mix and match from a variety of manufacturers including Trent, Perry, Boot Hill, Empress and Foundry. State Militia, Negro escaped slaves, Dragoons and especially Seminole civilians figures as well as U.S. regulars please. One specific go to range in terms breadth and quality will be a huge bonus. A terrifically inspiring if under appreciated period with huge skirmish potential with the likes of Sharp Practice as it really brings out the close small scale flavour of the conflict.

Definitely down as a contributor, have any ideas re sculptor for the figures yet?

Have been playing this period for a few years now using "Yellow Ribbon". Right now I have used Conquest and Old Glory for the Seminoles, Militia and US Army. Also used figures from Brigade's Caribbean Line for slaves. An additional range of figures would be great! Would really like to see some non-combatant figures.

jdginaz04 Feb 2019 9:21 a.m. PST

I' interested

Mr J197004 Feb 2019 12:10 p.m. PST

Thanks for the heads up on Brigade's Caribbean range.

FossilSN04 Feb 2019 6:05 p.m. PST

I'm interested.

There is a disappointing selection of 28mm regulars and artillery. Also need mounted Seminole.

Florida Tory05 Feb 2019 5:28 a.m. PST

Could use US Marines and sailors, a collapsible boat model of the type used in the war, US regulars in their summer fatigue uniform, US regulars in the uniform from the mid-1850s (for 3rd Seminole War skirmishes, which would be an easy and logical extension).

Travellera05 Feb 2019 6:32 a.m. PST

I am interested but I think the Seminoles from Warlord and Old Glory pretty much cover that side of the conflict. THe Old Glory US are good but there is a lack of US Marines, civilians and personalities

Indeed the Warlord (ex Conquest 500 nations miniatures?) are truly excellent sculpts and with a bit of judicious rummaging in various lists, especially Boothill Miniatures Mexico, Empress New Zealand and Perry Cape Wars ranges, proxy substitutes can be found. However you need to take the "film director's" stance and think in terms of flavour rather than outright accuracy. All of the above are superb miniatures. That said there are plenty of gaps: Here are my suggestions for what they are worth:

Seminole Indians/ Creek Indians

1) Command Pack Oceola mounted, dismounted chiefs, medicine man.

2) Villagers – Women folk and children, (crouching hiding would be a useful figure pose, as well as walking etc.) These are absolutely essential for skirmish gaming as proxy white settlers can be found amid Perry's ACW/ Cape War ranges but nobody does Seminole/ Creek villagers and civilians.

3)More Warriors are always useful.(muskets/ clubs and bow and arrow wouldn't hurt).

4) Wounded, carrying wounded fellow warrior, lying wounded.

5)Warriors in dugout canoe.

6)As suggested above, mounted Seminoles.

7) Escaped slaves with rifles and hand/ improvised weapons with command.

8) Escaped slaves casualties.

U.S. Regulars/ Militia Volunteers etc.

1) Regulars in a variety of hats(straw hats/ caps)as well as 1833 folding "Hog Killer" forage cap/ 1825 "Wheel spoke" pattern forage caps etc in Firing line and charging with the bayonet poses.(usual strategy for breaking through the Seminole line).

2) Command in various forms of Campaign dress.

3) U,S, Regulars casualties, assisting wounded comrades, lying wounded etc.

4)Camp scene around camp fire with camp followers/ Military surgeon etc.

5)Mounted Dragoons with Colt revolver Carbine, with command.
.
6) Mounted Horse holder and rider less horses.

7) Dismounted Dragoons with Command, with Colt revolver carbine.

8) "Irish Volunteers" and "Brisbane Blues" state militia with Command (Plate E from Osprey MAA 454).

9) U.S. Sailors landing party with Command. Armed with the Jenks rifle.

10) U.S. Marines landing party with command. (Plate H from Osprey MAA 398).

11) Creek Indian guides and allies with white recognition scarves around heads and arms.

12) U.S. Sailors pulling at oars/ manning Carronades to go with Laserdreamworks U.S. Gunboat.

13) U.S. Sailors and Marines in canoes
(see "Swamp Sailors in the Second Seminole War for details of this).

14) 6pld Artillery and crew in campaign order.

15) Civilians – "Cracker" White settlers/ farmers as well as gentry/ plantation owner and family, southern belle etc.
Serrissa Precision do a superb Surrey cab/ carriage crying out for these.

This represents and absolute dream "wish list" on my part but hope it helps to encourage discussion on the range and maybe some of the suggestions make it onto the table top! Wish you every success in the venture, oh and can we have a UK distributor.. the weak pound is killing us this side of the pond on top of ludicrous handling taxes and charges! Evidently items marked "toys" don't get stung as much, "miniatures" are considered antiques and taxed accordingly.

ACW Gamer05 Feb 2019 7:32 p.m. PST

Mr. J,

That's a comprehensive list! Thank you.

We will be using our "in house" sculptor if we get enough interest in this project.

I have been marking packets as "toy soldiers" and I still have Kickstarter backers in the UK getting clipped by Her Majesty's Government.

Old Glory UK is our current distributor.

Thanks to all for the feedback.

Mr. J1970s suggestions are good. The basic Army infantry and the Seminole Indians are well covered. We all know that the Marines have won all American wars all by themselves, even if they weren't there, while the Army stood by and played cards, so we certainly need the Marine and naval figures suggested. I would add that some transport, like wagons, with appropriate drivers, as they would be helpful for ambush scenarios.

Seminole houses are quite unique, so partnering with someone to create buildings to build up a Seminole village would be good. Some Seminole non-combatants for the villages would be good too.

While COMPLETELY off topic, something that is really missing in 28mm are early WWII Americans for Wake Island, the Philippines, etc. There are a handful of figures from Pulp Figures that will work, but that is just about all there is.

MacSparty26 Feb 2019 3:02 p.m. PST

I'm a little late to the party here, but yes, count me among the interested! That is indeed quite the comprehensive list from Mr J1970, and while I would not be one to add to that list, I would certainly agree with it, particularly the civilians and escaped slaves. Sure there are proxy, but none quite seem to hit the mark exactly.

I also agree with surdu2005 – something for a Seminole village would be great.

I recently had the opportunity to talk to a young Seminole woman, and these events are still very much part of their living memory. Fascinating period, and I hope this comes to fruition!

Mr J197027 Feb 2019 11:04 a.m. PST

ACW Gamer,

Was just wondering if you were able at this stage to give any further details over the forum of how Raven Banner Games may be considering pursuing this?

My thinking is, yes it's an unusual period but has just about everything to offer in terms of unusual/ visually striking terrain, tactics and a huge variety of uniforms. It's been referred to as "Vietnam with musket's" and it offers an exciting array of possibilities, from riverine actions, sieges, skirmishes to larger scale encounter battles. As well as attack and defend scenarios for the plantations, homesteads, villages and blockhouses/ forts along the Florida coastline.

It may well be a similar situation to say the Perry's Cape War range where the figures themselves are part of the momentum. However as a keen enthusiast of the period, I really hope the range goes ahead and gathers the support it deserves.

Did anything ever come of this?

Basha Felika07 Jul 2019 3:18 p.m. PST

I'd definitely be interested in this project

wargamingUSA08 Jul 2019 8:21 a.m. PST

Definitely interested in whats become of this initiative.

There is a lot of interest in 1st and 2nd Seminole Wars becasue so many of the figs can be crossed over into other game scenarios (Texas War of Independence, Mex-Am War, Indian Wars in the Carolinas, to name a few).

FossilSN18 Jul 2019 10:38 a.m. PST

Should this every rise to fruition, I have another request miniatures.

I love the Warlord Conquest Seminoles, but they are way overdressed. Miniatures always tend to show the Seminoles in their fancy dress used for portraits with the gorgets and everything. The Seminole wore significantly less than that in action and that should be represented in the figures. Right the now the alternative is to use Iroquois miniatures and modify the heads or hair.

Basha Felika18 Jul 2019 2:23 p.m. PST

Definitely interested butt, to be honest, I've never heard of Raven Banner and don't know the quality of their figures – life is too short (especially at my age) to waste any of it painting poor figures!

wargamingUSA31 Aug 2019 2:31 p.m. PST

Anyone heard anything more about this?
