"En 1794 se dispuso una nueva organización de las Milicias disciplinadas del Nuevo Reino de Granada(1).

Se dispuso que en la plaza de Cartagena y su provincia habría un regimiento de infantería, con el nombre de Voluntarios de Infantería de Cartagena, un batallón de Pardos libres con el nombre de la plaza y un escuadrón de dragones con el nombre de Voluntarios de Corozal. En total sumaban 2422 plazas de tropa de infantería y 200 de dragones.

El regimiento de Voluntarios de Infantería de Cartagena se componía de dos batallones y cada uno de estos tenía nueve compañías de la que una era de granaderos…."
