… Javier Bardem.

"If this cast is any indication, Denis Villeneuve's Dune is shaping up to be something special. Javier Bardem (mother!, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) is the latest actor in talks for the project, joining the ranks of Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and basically the entire Hollywood pantheon.

As reported in Variety, the Oscar winner is in talks to join the Dune reboot as Stilgar, the leader of Sietch Tabr, a Fremen tribe that takes in Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) and his mother (Rebecca Ferguson) after they escape the coup in Arrakis. Stilgar eventually rises up to become a powerful leader for the Fremen, shaping their world and future. Zendaya is also in talks to star as Chani, a Fremen warrior who develops a relationship with Chalamet's Atreides…."

Not personally, Tango. I read several of the books dating back to Analog serials, and was not as impressed as I'm evidently supposed to have been. Previous film efforts have not inspired--and, truthfully, if I were picking an SF setting for wargames, this would be pretty far down the list. Color and tactical variety--not politics and philosophy--are what makes wargaming. Setting aside the usual film franchises, if someone wanted to make a movie out of--just off hand:
Norton's Witch World books
Piper's Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen
Drake's Hammer's Slammers stories
Pournelle's Falkenberg stories
Dickson's Dorsai stories
Leigh Brackett's Mars
Burroughs' Barsoom
Bradley's Darkover (early books only, please!)
I'd be more interested, and they'd have more miniature wargaming potential.

I'm not opposed. I'm just not very interested.

I'm a huge fan of Dune. I'm just skeptical that they can cram it all in in a movie format. I think a miniseries (like the Syfy version many years ago) is the best way to go. Something that combines the script of the miniseries with the LOOk of the Lynch version would be my dream. Alas, I am not sure they will achieve that with this. Still, one can hope…

Damon.

I'm with Garand. It really needs a lengthy treatment.

The mini series had more depth, but was a soap opera. The characters seemed 21st century.

Lynch's version was truly bizarre with the right feel and visuals. I think it's safe to say that a couple thousand years in the future things are going to be WEIRD.

Couple thousand years?!? More like 15-20 thousand years…

While I liked the optics of the Lynch version, the story and acting were better in the miniseries. I hope they can somehow take the best of each and make them gel.

love the book. love the series. hard to combine it all in one movie. But the article does not appear clear about shooting dates. hope it will do itwith today's sci-fi effects.
