"Following the allied landings in Algeria and Morocco, both territories under the control of the Vichy government, the Tunisian campaign allowed the decisive expulsion of German and Italian troops from Africa in May 1943. The British regained control of the Mediterranean. At the same time, although the Allies' position was improving in the Atlantic, along the Eastern front the Soviets were still a long way from the German border, restlessly awaiting the opening of a second front that would relieve them…."
