My Friend Lou and I started a Battle Companies campaign. If your not familiar with it, BC allows you to play out linked battles, grow your warband over time, using the Middle-Earth Strategy Battle Game rules. "An expansion for the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game, this 80-page hardback allows you to assemble a small warband and, over the course of many linked games, watch as its members gain experience, learn skills and become battle-hardened."
Here are some pictures from our game.
Battle Companies is a very small battle by Strategy Battle Game standards.
The book comes with 12 scenarios to play out.
After the battle you assign experience to warriors and leaders based on what they did.
You also roll on the Recovery Charts for those fallen Warriors. Anything from Recovers Full, Miss a game, to Missing in action and Dead or Maimed.
With Experience you can grow your warband.

I've been thinking of doing it in 15mm/18mm. I already do WWII in 1:1 15mm skirmish. Looks great. |

The rules came free in white dwarf magazine around 2003ish. Each issue had a new warband ruleset. I guess this book has more stuff, but if you find the old wds they may give you a good idea of how it works. Add to this, the concept is pretty simple, so you should have no trouble making your own rules to use warbands with the standard rules. Fun example: Each warband has 1 captain and 4 basic and 2 specialist warrior types from a chosen theme (Rohan, Gondor, mordor, so on) all on foot. At end of each game roll a die for each survivor. For basics, on a 6 become specialist. For specialists and captain 1-3 give +1 ex.I f captain dies, warrior with most ex becomes a captain. Roll die for dead, 1-3 nothing are OK, 4 -1 random stat, 5 lost weapons, 6 dead remove from list. Winner roll die for loot. Each 2 loot buys 1 mount, 1 new basic troop, 6 can buys a small monster (cave troll, eagle so on, within theme of warband) See, too easy. |
