Planning a trip to Maine this summer. She Who Must Be Obeyed will indulge me in some limited historical sightseeing. Any suggestions?

Remember you are very close to Portsmouth NH and there are lots of things to see there

For the wife 10 miles or so south of Portsmouth on Rt 1 there is a very good Outlet mall near North Hampton NH.

Maine Maritime in Castine isn't too far from, I think it's Fort Adams, down Bucksport way…

Little known action from the War of 1812.

As far as malls, there's the Pheasant Lane Mall in Nashua, NH.

About 15 minutes from where I grew up.

LL Bean has an outlet store near the Maine state line…

Been away for a long time, but there is Fort Western which (IIRC) was the starting point for Arnold's march on Quebec. Fort Pownal in Stockton Springs is worth checking; not far from Fort Knox and the locale is the setting for Bernard Cornwell's "The Fort".

The Old Port in Portland (you'll both like it). Also in Portland, Longfellow's home – did you know he had been awarded a Blue Max? – and the Munjoy Observatory. In Brunswick, Chamberlain's home is a museum. Fort Allen in Portland provides some nice views of Portland's harbor defenses and has a gun from the USSMaine and a mast etc from the USSPortland (WWII cruiser as well as a couple of heavy AVE guns. Maine Military Museum in South Portland. And the Huzzah! convention happens the weekend of May19.
