Hot on the heels of my completed Norman Army comers my Saxon Army – these two have taken the best part of nine months to paint and I am very relieved they are almost all finished

Lots of pictures on the blog

Very impressive, but they still look more like a Viking army to me; too many beards.

The Bayeaux Tapestry only shows 1 or 2 Saxons with beards, all of the rest have moustaches or are clean-shaven. I guess beards could have been more popular in the old Danelaw regions, so perhaps a Northumbrian army or one led by Canute?

My other quibble is why do manufacturers not correctly show the Housecarles using their left-handed swing for their danish axes to strike their opponent's unshielded side? I think even GB have only 2 figures using the left-handed swing.

HOT DANG!! That's a bunch of Saxons!

Huscarle don't be such a downer… Could you do what he's done? I sure couldn't.

Huscarle

Thanks for your input – the Saxon Army will also be used as Vikings – so that way get two bangs for my buck ;-)

Always refreshing to see large armies on the tabletop in this day and age of the hobby. Well done.

I am overwhelmed by the size of the forces! Thanks for posting. Makes my 100 figure Arthurian army seem puny.

Very Impressive.

Always impressive stuff Eric! I have no idea how you are able to get through such a vast number of figures in a relatively short period of time. Really amazing stuff. I always look forward to your blog updates and really appreciate you sharing. Thanks and have a great week!

Leadjunky13 Jan 2019 2:40 p.m. PST

Very impressive collection.

Didn't know about a left handed swing. It does make tactical sense though.

Great job and I am sure a lot of hours of dedicated painting. Can't wait to see them posted in some battle reports.

Very impressive

Spooner614 Jan 2019 8:13 a.m. PST

That is impressive. You will have to post game pictures to show off both armies.

I agree with Aegisgc47, I enjoy seeing the big armies.

Thanks Guys – for some strange reason I started building big armies about five years ago. Each year I try to add another to the list – so far Ihave done Crusades, English Civil Wars, Napoleonics & Colonial (sudan & zulus)…

I have worked out the optimum number of troops (28mm) I can field on each side is about 500-600 aside and then the table starts to become crowded.

Watch out on the blog for the next project (actiually there are two in the pipeline

crazy baby! What rules?

EricThe Shed14 Jan 2019 12:03 p.m. PST

at the moment we need to decide between Hail Caesar and To the Strongest – going to playtest both in the next few weeks to see which will work for the really big game

Louie N14 Jan 2019 7:20 p.m. PST
